Adobe Walls

Adobe Walls PDF Author: T. Lindsay Baker
Publisher: Texas A&M University Press
ISBN: 9781585441761
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 456

Book Description
In the spring of 1874 a handful of men and one women set out for the Texas Panhandle to seek their fortunes in the great buffalo hunt. Moving south to follow the herds, they intended to establish a trading post to serve the hunter, or "hide men." At a place called Adobe Walls they dug blocks from the sod and built their center of operations After operating for only a few months, the post was attacked one sultry June morning by angry members of several Plains Indian tribes, whose physical and cultural survival depending on the great bison herd that were rapidly shrinking before the white men's guns. Initially defeated, that attacking Indians retreated. But the defenders also retreated leaving the deserted post to be burned by Indians intent on erasing all traces of the white man's presence. Nonetheless, tracing did remain, and in the ashes and dirt were buried minute details of the hide men's lives and the battle that so suddenly changed them. A little more than a century later white men again dug into the sod at Adobe Walls. The nineteenth-century men dug for profits, but the modern hunters sere looking for the natural time capsule inadvertently left by those earlier adventurers. The authors of this book, a historian and an archeologists, have dug into the sod and into far-flung archives to sift reality form the long-romanticized story of Adobe Walls, its residents, and the Indians who so fiercely resented their presence. The full story of Adobe Walls now tells us much about the life and work of the hide men, about the dying of the Plains Indian culture, and about the march of white commerce across the frontier.

Beryllium

Beryllium PDF Author: Michael J. Brisson
Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
ISBN: 1847559034
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 215

Book Description
As the use of beryllium grows worldwide, the need for a single source of information on this important but toxic element is of increasing importance. This comprehensive book describes all aspects of the current sampling and analysis techniques for trace-level beryllium in the workplace. It offers both a historical perspective and a description of the state-of-the-art in a single place. It covers the challenges inherent in sampling procedures such as reproducibility, limited sample volume, surface sampling materials and collection efficiency. It also deals with the problems involved in analytical techniques including lower detection limits, identification and compensation for matrix interferences, greater sensitivity requirements and the need for more robust preparation techniques. Future trends, including development of real-time beryllium sampling and analysis equipment, are also explored. Readers will gain an understanding of sampling and analytical techniques best suited for sensitive and accurate analysis of beryllium at ultra-trace levels in environmental and workplace samples. Many "standard" sampling and analysis techniques have weaknesses that this book will help users avoid. Written by recognized experts in the field, the book provides a single point of reference for professionals in analytical chemistry, industrial hygiene, and environmental science.

Making Music with Samples

Making Music with Samples PDF Author: Daniel Duffell
Publisher: Hal Leonard Corporation
ISBN: 9780879308391
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 220

Book Description
Making Music With Samples is packed with creative, hands-on tips - aimed at getting the reader actively enjoying the art of sampling as quickly and easily as possible - interspersed with snippets of essential theoretical stuff: whether it's the science of sound, or copyright legalities. Starting with the absolute basics of what sampling is, author Dan Duffell progresses from simpler, widely-used tools like small loop-based samplers, through the various platforms available to the sample user - the different methods and equipment required to create and manipulate samples, including: hardware samplers, sampling/keyboard workstations, computer setups, software samplers, drum samplers, etc. He then describes the setting up procedures needed to get you started - connections and installation, signal levels and so on - at the same time providing some relevant background information on how a sampler actually works. Next: choosing source material - whether created you, or from sample CDs like the one attached, or from other people's recordings - which inevitably also raises the thorny subject of copyright and licensing: sampling and the law. Then there's a section depicting the basic layout and operation of some well-known software and hardware samplers, and a look at Sampling & Synthesis and Modular Systems...

Aerosol Sampling

Aerosol Sampling PDF Author: James H. Vincent
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470060220
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 636

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive account of the important field of aerosol sampling as it is applied to the measurement of aerosols that are ubiquitous in occupational and living environments, both indoor and outdoor. It is written in four parts: Part A contains 9 chapters that describe the current knowledge of the physical science that underpins the process of aerosol sampling. Part B contains 4 chapters, which present the basis of standards for aerosols, including the link with human exposure by inhalation. Part C contains 7 chapters that cover the development of practical aerosol sampling instrumentation, and how technical designs and methods have evolved over the years in order that aerosol sampling may be carried out in a manner matching the health-related and other criteria that have been proposed as parts of standards. Finally Part D contains 6 chapters that describe how a wide range of aerosol sampling instruments have performed when they have been applied in the field in both occupational and ambient atmospheric environments, including how different instruments, nominally intended to measure the same aerosol fraction, compare when used side-by-side in the real world. The book draws together all that is known about aerosol sampling, for the benefit of researchers and practitioners in occupational and environmental health and all other fields of science and engineering where aerosols are of interest.
