Book Description
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1919 edition. Excerpt: ... Then put four small drums into the display, as we have done. Separate the drums with clusters of three moss paper horsehead plumes. Put another drum in front of the floor cluster of flags. Put a postcard in front of each cluster of horsehead plumes. Several glass trays of candy put right next to the glass can be used to very good advantage. The unit on the right is made exactly the same as the one on the left. Washington's birthday is one of the events from which you can gain much valued publicity. Cover the background with red crepe paper. For the border use a strip of flag crepe paper as shown in the photograph. Use a lithographed picture of VVas_hington. Almost any ordinary size will do. To arrange the picture, cut a strip of the strawboard about three inches wide and form a circle out of it. Pin this to the center of the background, over the picture. The circle can be formed merely by bending the strawboard around and pinning it in position. Make another circle out of the strawboard (this one will have to be cut out), and pin it over the front edge of the first circle. Back of this, stick through the strawboard of the first circle a quantity of small flags. The strawboard of these two circles should be White. Any other color can be used if you cover it with white crepe paper. On each side of the picture in the upper corners of the background drape three large flags, as we have done. Next, take four of your small boxes (they must be very narrow) and put them end on end to form two pedestals immediately under the picture. They should be covered with red crepe paper. On each of these arrange eighteen Washington's birthday postcards, following the photograph closely. On top of each put a small statue of Washington. This...

Designing the Department Store

Designing the Department Store PDF Author: Emily M. Orr
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350054380
Category : Design
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
The book builds an original argument for the department store as a significant site of design production, and therefore offers an alternative interpretation to the mainstream focus on consumption within retail history. Emily M. Orr presents a fresh perspective on the rise of modern urban consumer culture, of which the department store was a key feature. By investigating the production processes of display as well as fascinating information about display-making's tools and technologies, the skills of the displayman and the meaning and context of design decisions which shaped the final visual effect are revealed. In addition, the book identifies and isolates 'display' as a distinct moment in the life of the commodity, and understands it as an influential channel of mediation in the shopping experience. The assembly and interpretation of a diverse range of previously unexplored primary resources and archives yields fascinating new evidence, showing how display achieved an agency which transformed everyday objects into commodities and made consumers out of passersby.
