Book Description
Excerpt from The British and Foreign Medico-Chirurgical Review, Vol. 47: Or Quarterly Journal of Practical Medicine and Surgery; January April, 1871 Professor Rollrston's long-promised work has at length appeared. This volume, from its intrinsic importance as well as the distinguished position and reputation of its author, demands special examination and candid criticism. Our first impression is one of disappointment. We had hoped for a book which, while it faithfully reproduced the accepted results of previous workers, should yet bear the stamp of originality; which should be written in a style of clear composition unburdened by needless technicalities, and which, lastly, should be of use, not merely to members of Professor Rolleston's class, but to all persons who can understand the English language. Now what do we find? Professor Rolleston's book can scarcely, even by the most partial Oxford friend, be termed original: its best points are borrowed from Gegenbaur's 'Grundziige der Vegleich ende Anatomiethe style bristles with the most recondite terms of Germanic origin; while each sentence, probably from a laudable desire to save space, has been compressed into so narrow a compass that sense is too often sacrificed to brevity. Finally, as the illustrative specimens exist in the Oxford Museum only, we fear that few but Oxford men can derive much benefit from a perusal of the book. We now proceed to consider it in detail. Book Description
Excerpt from The British and Foreign Medico-Chirurgical Review, or Quarterly Journal of Practical Medicine and Surgery, Vol. 37: January-April, 1866 Within the last few years the entirely lay character and manage ment of British hospitals has, in some degree, been broken down by the introduction into several of their number of ladies and others trained as nurses, and at the same time members of private associations, banded together by religious ties, amenable to particular rules, and governed by a responsible head. In Dublin, the establishment of the Mater Misericordim hos pital by the Sisters of Charity, is an instance of a revival of the ancient connexion between the convent and the house for the sick poor. The prevailing tendency of the present time in England seems to be to re-invoke the religious element in the nursing of the sick, both in public and in private the conviction obtaining, and being supported also by experience (now that pre judices are becoming weaker), that nursing is more efficient and humane when carried out under religious sanction by individuals devoted to it as a work of love and mercy. In the above remarks credit has been taken for the influence of that primary principle of Christianity - charity, in the insti tution of receptacles for the nurture and tending of the sick poor; and, so far as that principle has operated, Christianity may be fairly deemed instrumental in the establishment of hos pitals. Yet there is no question that, prior to the dawn of Christianity, institutions for the benefit of the sick were to be found in every country that had attained the higher degrees of civilization then existing. Wherever the religion of Greece and Rome extended temples arose dedicated to Esculapius, and health-giving fountains were discovered and consecrated to Hygeia, to which sick folk might resort, and where they might receive aid and advice from the attendant priests and ministers. Certain Observances and ceremonies were to be gone through, which, though identified with religion, were at the same time calculated to benefit the health, being derived undoubtedly in a great measure from'the teachings of experience. Indeed, much knowledge of disease must have been acquired by the temple attendants, both from their own observation of the applicants for relief and from the records of former cases, which were, as we know, preserved; and, besides this, their interests were more or less identified with the reputation and success of the sacred place they served. Book Description
Excerpt from British and Foreign Medico-Chirurgical Review, Vol. 43 1. The Swedish 'Archives of Medicine' which we have placed at the head of the foregoing list, improves with every number, and may now challenge comparison with any journal, whether as regards the extent and importance of its articles, or the beauty of its typography and illustrations. From the notices which we have given of previous issues, our readers are aware that this publication differs from periodicals properly so called, in not appearing at stated intervals, although two or three numbers are usually given yearly, and in the greater length and more elaborate nature of some of the essays it contains. Each essay is separately paged, and when illustrated, is immediately followed by its plates, so as with ease to form, if desired, a separate work. A. The subject of the first essay in the number before us, the gustatory papillae of the tongue, is one which has already at some length engaged our attention, in considering the work of Axel Key in our twenty-ninth volume, page 422, and of Dr. Engelmann, of Utrecht, in the number of this Review for July, 1868. Their researches related, however, to the tongue of the frog, while Hr. Loven has investigated the organ in the mammalia. The author sums up his paper, which is illustrated with a most beautifully executed plate, in the following words: "From what has gone before, I must consider it most probable, that in the papillae circumvallatae in the calf (and in man) the gustatory nerves, after losing the medullary sheath in the outer layer of the mucous membrane, are continued up into the gustatory bulbs as naked axis-cylinders, and similarly circumstanced divide into a number of branches, which pass directly into the gustatory cells. But how far the gustatory cells, which in this manner come to be connected with the same nerve filament, belong to one or to several gustatory bulbs, or whether both these conditions may exist, I cannot decide.
