International Sport

International Sport PDF Author: Richard William Cox
Publisher: Psychology Press
ISBN: 0714652601
Category : Sports
Languages : en
Pages : 338

Book Description
There has been an explosion in the quantity of sports history literature published in recent years, making it increasingly difficult to keep abreast of developments. The annual number of publications has increased from around 250 to 1,000 a year over the last decade. This is due in part to the fact that during the late 1980s and 90s, many clubs, leagues and governing bodies of sport have celebrated their centenaries and produced histories to mark this occasion and commemorate their achievements. It is also the result of the growing popularity and realisation of the importance of sport history research within academe. This international bibliography of books, articles, conference proceedings and essays in the English language is a one-stop for the sports historian to know what is new.

Nymph Fishing

Nymph Fishing PDF Author: Terry Lawton
Publisher: Stackpole Books
ISBN: 9780811701549
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 216

Book Description
Upstream nymph fishing has developed from the minor tactic of G.E.M. Skues into a universally-accepted method wherever fly fishermen fish for brown trout and grayling. The history of nymph fishing is notable for the argument between F.M. Halford, the dry-fly ultrapurist, and Skues, culminating in the debate on the legitimacy of fishing nymphs on chalkstreams and the later fallout between Frank Sawyer and Major Oliver Kite. For the first thirty years of the twentieth century, nymph fishermen were held in contempt and often considered little better than poachers on many chalkstreams. Nymph fishing started and was developed in England and then spread, along with nymph patterns, around the world through the writings of Skues and others and the travels of English anglers. Over the last fifty years, the English method has been adapted and developed to suit local conditions, particularly in the United States.

Memories of Travel PDF Author: James Bryce Bryce (Viscount)
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Voyages and travels
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
This book contains the author's impressions of natural beauty and historic interest from his travels. His early years were devoted to mountain climbing, such as in his 1872 trip to Iceland, and his expeditions to the Polish and Hungary Alps, made with Leslie Stephen. He also went to the Alps in 1884 with Edward Bowen of Harrow in order to follow the march of the Russian General Suvaroff in the campaign against the French in 1799 when he crossed the St. Gotthard to make his way through Canton Schwyz to join the Austrian Archduke Charles at Zürich. Also included are later travels to Palestine and Petra just months before the outbreak of the Great War; the Islands of the Southern Pacific; a journey through Siberia, and two hundred miles up the Obi River to the Altai Mountains; as well as a visit to the United States in 1921.
