Book Description
Excerpt from The Boys and Girls of the Revolution Young men and maidens, children, and even babes, played an important part in the war for American independence. From every page of its wonderful history some deed of a puny arm stands out from the sturdy blows that fell so thickly for liberty, or some childish prattle is heard amid the roar of cannon and the noise of war. On every field of strife the blood of children mingled with the blood of grandsires. The first martyr in the cause was a little boy of Boston, whose manly conquest of death was an auspicious opening of the struggle. And in the glorious closing scene at Yorktown, amid the rejoicings of victorious hearts and the tears of conquered heroes, a slight form stepped forth - a mere lad of nineteen - and received the fallen standards of the British Empire. A Continuous Revolution

A Continuous Revolution PDF Author: Barbara Mittler
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 1684175186
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 511

Book Description
Cultural Revolution Culture, often denigrated as nothing but propaganda, was liked not only in its heyday but continues to be enjoyed today. A Continuous Revolution sets out to explain its legacy. By considering Cultural Revolution propaganda art—music, stage works, prints and posters, comics, and literature—from the point of view of its longue durée, Barbara Mittler suggests it was able to build on a tradition of earlier art works, and this allowed for its sedimentation in cultural memory and its proliferation in contemporary China. Taking the aesthetic experience of the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) as her base, Mittler juxtaposes close readings and analyses of cultural products from the period with impressions given in a series of personal interviews conducted in the early 2000s with Chinese from diverse class and generational backgrounds. By including much testimony from these original voices, Mittler illustrates the extremely multifaceted and contradictory nature of the Cultural Revolution, both in terms of artistic production and of its cultural experience.

The Boys and Girls, of Garden City (Classic Reprint)

The Boys and Girls, of Garden City (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Jean Dawson

Pages : 368

Book Description
Excerpt from The Boys and Girls, of Garden City The purpose of infancy and childhood is to prepare, adapt, and educate for efficiency in adult life, and, under present conditions, this means chiefly social efficiency. The progress of science and discovery, too, is so rapid that the scientific education of even thirty years ago is totally inadequate to meet present social needs. What will these needs be thirty years hence, when our boys and girls are in the midst of their generations struggle for social progress? We can only judge the future by the past, but one thing is certain: progress in science is likely to be increasingly rapid, and in order to keep social life abreast of its discoveries we must instill into the young mind the spirit and method of the alert and active scientist. The true function of youth, with its ability and avidity to learn, ought to be to keep the community life continuously abreast of discovery. This is the problem of elementary-science instruction. With the young of animals, play is the method of education which prepares for the strenuous activities of adult life. Hence it is but natural that we find the play instinct the most dominant, universal, and wholesome impulse of child life. Instead of repressing the play instinct, as too much of our school life in the past has attempted to do, why not guide and develop this strong current of child life, and make it a real preparation for future social efficiency? Virago Reprints and Modern Classics

Virago Reprints and Modern Classics PDF Author: D-M Withers
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108865224
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 162

Book Description
Reprinting, republishing and re-covering old books in new clothes is an established publishing practice. How are books that have fallen out of taste and favour resituated by publishers, and recognised by readers, as relevant and timely? This Element outlines three historical textures within British culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s – History, Remembrance and Heritage – that enabled Virago's reprint publishing to become a commercial and cultural success. With detailed archival case studies of the Virago Reprint Library, Testament of Youth and the Virago Modern Classics, it elaborates how reprints were profitable for the publisher and moved Virago's books - and the Virago brand name - from the periphery of culture to the centre. Throughout Virago's reprint publishing - and especially with the Modern Classics - the epistemic revelation that women writers were forgotten and could, therefore, be rediscovered, was repeated, again and again, and made culturally productive through the marketplace.
