Excerpt from The Book of Common Prayer: Interpreted by Its History To attain the ends of public worship, it is necessary that we should "pray" both "with the spirit and with the understanding." In our public assemblies for the worship of God we should, therefore, adopt such a method as is best calculated to effect that object.
