Book Description
Excerpt from Canterbury Rhymes AN American author, in introducing, the other day, a new book to the Public, commenced his Preface with the remark, that his volume had not been published in deference to the urgent and repeated requests of the writer's enthusiastic friends, who must therefore be responsible, - and so forth. He had written it, he went on to explain, to please himself, and he published it with the hope of making a little money out of it. The publishers of the present edition of the Cantcrtury Rhymes wish they could imitate the candour and share the hopes of that author. Unfortunately they can do neither the one nor the other. To say nothing of the latter, it happens to be true that during the fifteen years in which the original edition has been out of print, suggestions have often been made to them to print another. Indeed, it is to the persuasions of a genial old identity that this volume owes its existence; and to the same gentleman's courtesy the Editor is indebted for the copy of the original Rhymes used in preparing the present edition. On going through the old contributions, it seemed advisable not to reproduce a few of them, and nine were therefore excised. The others are reprinted unaltered, and the orginal Notes, written by the late Mr. Crosbie Ward, have also been left untouched. Book Description
Excerpt from The Jubilee Book of Canterbury Rhymes Of the poems included in this volume, twelve are printed now for the first time: as to the rest, the names of the books, magazines, or newspapers in which they previously appeared are given in the text. The arrangement is mainly chronological; but it has not been thought advisable, for the sake of preserving this sequence, to separate poems by the same author. Many readers will perhaps be disappointed at missing from the selection this or that poem they remember; for much good verse has probably altogether escaped the Editor's search; and much he has been compelled to pass over from the necessary limitations to the size of his volume. The Editor desires to express his thanks to all those writers, to whom he was able to apply, for the permission, in every case readily granted, to reproduce their work: to the proprietors of the Lyttelton Times and Canterbury Times, the Christchurch Press and Weekly Press, the Otago Witness, and other papers and magazines for allowing him to reprint verses that first appeared in their journals: and to Messrs. Whitcombe and Tombs for the interest they have taken in the publication and the care and taste they have bestowed upon its production. For the information given at the end of the volume, he is largely indebted to the "Notes" to both editions of the Canterbury Rhymes; while several of the biographical sketches are condensed from Cox's "Men of Mark in New Zealand." Of the work of editing and writing this little volume, the greater part has been done on a sick-bed, the whole in hospital. Under these circumstances, the Editor has been obliged to draw largely on the kindness of his personal friends for help in the work of searching "files," copying MSS., and reading proofs; for the help so generously given, he begs them accept his most sincere thanks.
