R.r. Books to be reserved should be brought to the Assistant's table (each work With the reserving slip), and will there be reserved for 7 days. Unreserved books and all Reference and Select books are cleared away daily. A reasonable limit for reserved books is in general twenty volumes. Tracing and painting need special permission. Excerpt from Annals of the Bodleian Library, Oxford: With a Notice of the Earlier Library of the University When this book was first published twenty-two years ago, it was found to appeal to the interest of so limited a class of readers, although one which in the course of years has gradually made it to become somewhat scarce, that the idea of publishing a second edition was never entertained by me. The accumulation of additional notes, indeed, continually went on, but it was with the idea of giving an enlarged copy some day to the Library in the belief that after my death it would be found useful. But it is owing to the present Librarian that this second edition now appears under my own eye and care. For the book had become a manual of such continual use in the Library'that the Librarian was desirous that the additional matter should be rendered avail able while a last inheritor of some traditional information and a last associate in some details and labours under the man agement that existed fifty years agostill survives on the staff. Excerpt from A Student's Guide to the Manuscripts Relating to English History in the Seventeenth Century in the Bodleian Library The plan of this guide has been to begin with a general account of the five large collections of seventeenth-century mss., and then to arrange under headings separate items, dividing them into two sections, the first extending to 1660, the second covering the years 1660-1714. It is assumed that the student will read right through this guide, so no cross-references are given. An attempt has been made throughout to point out where considerable parts of a ms. Have been printed. It will be seen that the most valuable materials are those relating to the Puritan Revolution, and these, although they have been carefully studied, would still yield a rich gleaning. But both before 1640 and, more especi ally, after 1660, there are vast stores of documents which have suffered an undeserved neglect at the hands of our historians. It is my pleasant duty to acknowledge the assist ance I have received from Professor 0. H. Firth in compiling and arranging this little guide. Apart from much kind advice, I am, in common with others, much indebted to the article he contributed to the Mariner's Mirror in August, 1913, on Papers relating to the Navy in the Bodleian Library.
