Temperance Societies in Late Victorian and Edwardian England

Temperance Societies in Late Victorian and Edwardian England PDF Author: David M. Fahey
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527559998
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 174

Book Description
By studying the temperance societies that flourished in late Victorian and Edwardian England, this book opens a window through which we can view middle-class and working-class society. Such societies provided the backbone for temperance both as a social movement and a political lobby. Most temperance societies became aligned with the Liberal Party in support of prohibition by Local Veto. A few allowed members to drink, but most were committed to total abstinence. There were organizations of middle-class men, of workingmen and their wives, of women, and of children and youth. The largest adult society was affiliated with the Church of England, but most societies were identified with Nonconformist denominations.

Worsted to Westminster

Worsted to Westminster PDF Author: J. B. Williams
Publisher: Darcy Press
ISBN: 0956252303
Category : Great Britain
Languages : en
Pages : 331

Book Description
Reverend Dr. Charles Leach was the only Member of Parliament who has ever lost his seat for being of 'unsound mind'. Worsted to Westminster charts how he rose from a humble birth in rural Yorkshire to become a shoemaker, prominent preacher, lecturer, traveller, writer, socialist, businessman, army chaplain, and MP. His ability to be where the action was, makes for a fascinating glimpse into the history of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
