Agriculture in Capitalist Europe, 1945–1960

Agriculture in Capitalist Europe, 1945–1960 PDF Author: Carin Martiin
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1315465914
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
In the years before the Second World War agriculture in most European states was carried out on peasant or small family farms using technologies that relied mainly on organic inputs and local knowledge and skills, supplying products into a market that was partly local or national, partly international. The war applied a profound shock to this system. In some countries farms became battlefields, causing the extensive destruction of buildings, crops and livestock. In others, farmers had to respond to calls from the state for increased production to cope with the effects of wartime disruption of international trade. By the end of the war food was rationed when it was obtainable at all. Only fifteen years later the erstwhile enemies were planning ways of bringing about a single agricultural market across much of continental western Europe, as farmers mechanised, motorized, shed labour, invested capital, and adopted new technologies to increase output. This volume brings together scholars working on this period of dramatic technical, commercial and political change in agriculture, from the end of the Second World War to the emergence of the Common Agricultural Policy in the early 1960s. Their work is structured around four themes: the changes in the international political order within which agriculture operated; the emergence of a range of different market regulation schemes that preceded the CAP; changes in technology and the extent to which they were promoted by state policy; and the impact of these political and technical changes on rural societies in western Europe.

The Cyprus Detention Camps

The Cyprus Detention Camps PDF Author: Yitzhak Teutsch
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527537269
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 381

Book Description
Beginning in August 1946, stateless and visaless Jews—most of them survivors of the Nazi death camps—who sought to immigrate to the Land of Israel were intercepted by the Royal Navy and deported to the nearby island of Cyprus, where they were detained in camps surrounded by barbed wire. Despite occupying a dramatic and fateful position in modern history, this saga has remained largely inaccessible due to the widespread dispersal of the primary sources and the linguistic difficulties presented by them. To address these problems, this book scrutinizes the scholarly literature, consulting hundreds of primary sources—many of them previously unknown—on three continents, bringing together interviews with scores of eyewitnesses, and translating foreign-language terms into English. The result is a comprehensive, meticulously footnoted guide that uses such tools as maps, a detailed timeline, and biographical entries to make this riveting saga accessible to a broad audience of scholars and general readers.

BRITAIN'S WAR

BRITAIN'S WAR PDF Author: Daniel Todman
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0190658487
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 993

Book Description
The most terrible emergency in Britain's history, the Second World War required an unprecedented national effort. An exhausted country had to fight an unexpectedly long war and found itself much diminished amongst the victors. Yet the outcome of the war was nonetheless a triumph, not least for a political system that proved well adapted to the demands of a total conflict and for a population who had to make many sacrifices but who were spared most of the horrors experienced in the rest of Europe. Britain's War is a narrative of these epic events, an analysis of the myriad factors that shaped military success and failure, and an explanation of what the war tells us about the history of modern Britain. As compelling on the major military events as he is on the experience of ordinary people living through exceptional times, Todman suffuses his extraordinary book with a vivid sense of a struggle which left nobody unchanged - and explores why, despite terror, separation and deprivation, Britons were overwhelmingly willing to pay the price of victory.

Landmark Cases in the Law of Restitution

Landmark Cases in the Law of Restitution PDF Author: C Mitchell
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1847316956
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 269

Book Description
It is now well established that the law of unjust enrichment forms an important and distinctive part of the English law of obligations. Restitutionary awards for unjust enrichment and for wrongdoing are clearly recognised for what they are. But these are recent developments. Before the last decade of the twentieth century the very existence of a separate law of unjust enrichment was controversial, its scope and content matters of dispute. In this collection of essays, a group of leading scholars look back and reappraise some of the landmark cases in the law of restitution. They range from the early seventeenth century to the mid-twentieth century, and shed new light on some classic decisions. Some argue that the importance of their case has been overstated; others, that it has been overlooked, or misconceived. All persuasively invite the reader to think again about some well-known authorities. The book is an essential resource for anyone, scholar, student or practitioner, with an interest in this fascinating area of the law.

Women, Social Leadership, and the Second World War

Women, Social Leadership, and the Second World War PDF Author: James Hinton
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0199243298
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
By mobilizing a million housewives, the upper- and middle-class leaders of Women's Voluntary Service made a vital contribution to Britain's war effort. At the same time they sought to sustain their own authority as social leaders. James Hinton's original and evocative study reconstructs an intimate portrait of a women's public world neglected by historians. It challenges accepted accounts of the democratizing impact of the Second World War. Among women the war reinforced, notdemocracy, but the continuities of class.

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en

Book Description
Brian Abel-Smith was one of the most influential expert advisers of the 20th century in shaping social welfare. He was a modern-day Thomas Paine, driven by a strong socialist mission to improve the lives of the poorest. This valuable and accessible book is the first biography of Abel-Smith. It takes a historical perspective to analyse the development of health and social welfare systems since the 1950s, exposing the critical impact of long-running debates on poverty and state responsibility, especially in Britain. This book also provides the first comparative study of how developing countries sought better health and social welfare, enabled by the World Health Organization and other agencies for whom Abel-Smith regularly worked. This book offers an engaging and useful study for students and researchers in health and social policy, history, politics and economics and interested general readers. It will also be essential reading for professionals working in those government ministries and institutions that Brian Abel-Smith helped to shape. LSE Pioneers in Social Policy Brian Abel-Smith, Richard Titmuss and Peter Townsend, all based at the London School of Economics and Political Science, made major contributions to the development of policies on the elderly, health care, law, poverty and welfare in the 20th century. This series of biographies tells the stories of these outstanding individuals: their backgrounds, ideas and work.

Book Description
The Second World War shattered and remade the world. Two great powers - the United States and the Soviet Union - warily confronted each other across the smoking ruins of Europe. But the end of war for Europeans prompted a surge of renewed struggle in colonial areas, as nationalist groups sought greater autonomy or independence. The weakened, tottering empires of Britain, France, and the Netherlands - their myths of military and racial superiority destroyed by the wartime line of march - were beset. American policymakers were no longer afforded the luxury of ignoring colonial problems as they began to fashion a new globalism to counter Soviet influence.
