This approach is a logical progression - as alluded to above the universe is far vaster and more hostile than was ever imagined in the early decades of the 20th century. Just how do we even begin to delineate the possible monstrosities that might inhabit the corners of the infinity we call space? The tales of Lovecraft touched on primal fears of the dark unknown, with great effect, and now, nearly a century on, the spirit of the Lovecraftian tale is still with us, courtesy of a group of literary explorers willing to forge through the dark matter of our hostile home and write of their experiences and travails in the lightless places. These 27 epistles of horror and weirdness are presented as a testament to the fact that, as much as we've discovered since Howard Philips Lovecraft's time, there are still many more unknowns waiting to be uncovered.Parry Milton

"The Black Stone" is a short story by Robert Ervin Howard. Robert Ervin Howard (January 22, 1906 - June 11, 1936) was an American author who wrote pulp fiction in a diverse range of genres. He is well known for his character Conan the Barbarian and is regarded as the father of the sword and sorcery subgenre. Howard was born and raised in the state of Texas. He spent most of his life in the town of Cross Plains with some time spent in nearby Brownwood. A bookish and intellectual child, he was also a fan of boxing and spent some time in his late teens bodybuilding, eventually taking up amateur boxing. From the age of nine he dreamed of becoming a writer of adventure fiction but did not have real success until he was 23. Thereafter, until his death at the age of 30 by suicide, Howard's writings were published in a wide selection of magazines, journals, and newspapers, and he had become successful in several genres. Although a Conan novel was nearly published into a book in 1934, his stories never appeared in book form during his lifetime.

Various locals grow suspicious after Old Whateley buys more and more cattle, yet the number of his herd never increases and the cattle in his field become mysteriously afflicted with severe open wounds. Wilbur and Old Whateley have sequestered an unseen entity at their farmhouse; this entity is connected somehow to a being known as Yog-Sothoth, which is Wilbur's father. Year by year, the entity grows to monstrous proportions, requiring the two men to make frequent modifications to the farmhouse. People begin to notice a trend of cattle mysteriously disappearing. Old Whateley eventually dies, and his mother disappears soon after. The colossal entity eventually occupies the entire interior of the farmhouse. Wilbur ventures to Miskatonic University in Arkham to procure the copy of the Necronomicon – Miskatonic's library is one of only a handful in the world to stock an original. The Necronomicon has spells that Wilbur can use to summon the Old Ones, but his family's copy is damaged and lacks the page he needs to open the "door".
