Islands offer unusual opportunities for studying theoretical concepts in ecology. I studied the role of island size and isolation in structuring assemblages of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) on the islands and adjacent mainland of Lac la Ronge, Saskatchewan, Canada. Carabid beetles were collected on 30 islands (0.2 - 980.7 ha in size, 0.13 - 10.7 km from mainland) and five mainland sites using pitfall traps throughout the frost-free season. Carabid body size, wing length and seasonal activity information was obtained from the literature. In wing-dimorphic species, wing length was diagnosed by removing the elytra and subsequent dissections to determine the condition of flight muscles. Island size was an important factor affecting beetle assemblage, diversity, and population processes on islands. Island isolation did not negatively influence diversity at the scales examined in this study. Life history characteristics of species such as body size, wing length, and breeding period significantly influenced the distribution of beetles on islands. This work suggests that small islands experience greater turnover of carabids, particularly large-bodied flightless species, and that this may account for the island area effect observed in this island system.

A summary of the natural history of the ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae; over 2400 taxa) from North America north of Mexico is presented. Under each taxon, the ecology, biology, dispersal power, collecting techniques, and selected references are given. The section on ecology comprises the following: altitudinal distribution, habitat, diel activity, and gregariousness. The section dealing with biology gives details on seasonality, mating, gravid females or oviposition, tenerals, overwintering, feeding, predation, parasitism, and defense-mechanism. The section on dispersal power, or the capability of dispersal, has been assessed when possible, using three main criteria: wing condition, flight data (including light-trapping observations), and other locomotory habits. This open access book presents and analyzes the results of more than 30 years of long-term ecological research in riparian forest ecosystems with the aim of casting light on changes in the dynamics of riparian forests over time. The research, focusing on the Ooyamazawa riparian forest, one of the remaining old-growth forests in Japan, has yielded a number of interesting outcomes. First, it shows that large-scale disturbances afford various trees opportunities for regeneration and are thus the driving force for the coexistence of canopy trees in riparian forests. Second, it identifies changes in reproductive patterns, highlighting that seed production has in fact quantitatively increased over the past two decades. Third, it describes the decline in forest floor vegetation caused by deer grazing and reveals how this decline has affected bird and insect populations.
