Book Description
Excerpt from The Betrayal Like a clap of thunder, the north wind, rushing seawards, seemed suddenly to threaten the ancient little building with destruction. The window sashes rattled, the beams which supported the roof creaked and groaned, the oil lamps by which alone the place was lit swung perilously in their chains. A row of maps designed for the instruction of the young - the place was a schoolhouse - commenced a devil's dance against the wall. In the street without we heard the crash of a fallen chimneypot. My audience of four rose timorously to its feet, and I, glad of the excuse, folded my notes and stepped from the slightly raised platform on to the floor. "I am much obliged to you for coming," I said, "but I think that it is quite useless to continue, for I can scarcely make you hear, and I am not at all sure that the place is safe." I spoke hastily, my one desire being to escape from the scene of my humiliation unaccosted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Betrayal: A Sacred Poem The subject of the following Poem occupies a dark page in the Gospel history: a page as brief as it is gloomy. The defection of Judas Iscariot from his Master, and his venal treachery, are a connecting link in the series of events by which the predeterminate counsel of God is fulfilled in the great moral sacrifice of the Redeemer: and, in perfect keeping with the style of inspired narrative. Book Description
Excerpt from The Betrayal of John Fordham Our child Hers - mine. I am the sweet little fellow's father. I saw him yesterday with his mother, though neither he nor my dear Ellen knew that I was near them, for I was careful they should not see my face. How he has grown! Yesterday was his fourth birth day, and today Ellen is wondering who left the toy horse and cart at her lodgings. His sturdy little limbs, his lovely hair, his large brown eyes with their wonderful lashes, the music of his voice! What bliss, what torture I endured as I followed and listened to his prattle. My Disillusionment in Russia

My Disillusionment in Russia PDF Author: Emma Goldman
Publisher: Standard Ebooks
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 308

Book Description
In 1919, at the height of the anti-leftist Palmer Raids conducted by the Wilson administration, the anarchist activist and writer Emma Goldman was deported to the nascent Soviet Union. Despite initial plans to fight the deportation order in court, Goldman eventually acquiesced in order to take part in the new revolutionary Russia herself. While initially supportive of the Bolsheviks, with some reservations, Goldman’s firsthand experiences with Bolshevik oppression and corruption prompted her titular disillusionment and eventual emigration to Germany. In My Disillusionment in Russia, Goldman records her travels throughout Russia as part of a revolutionary museum commission, and her interactions with a variety of political and literary figures like Vladimir Lenin, Maxim Gorky, John Reed, and Peter Kropotkin. Goldman concludes her account with a critique of the Bolshevik ideology in which she asserts that revolutionary change in institutions cannot take place without corresponding changes in values. My Disillusionment in Russia had a troubled publication history, since the first American printing in 1923 omitted the last twelve chapters of what was supposed to be a thirty-three chapter book. (Somehow, the last chapters failed to reach the publisher, who did not suspect the book to be incomplete.) The situation was remedied with the publication of the remaining chapters in 1924 as part of a volume titled My Further Disillusionment in Russia. This Standard Ebooks edition compiles both volumes into a single volume, following the intent of the original manuscript. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

The Betrayal of the Peoples (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Union Of Democratic Control

Book Description
Excerpt from The Betrayal of the Peoples It was open to the Allies to reject the proposed basis. But they accepted it, and having done so they are under a moral obligation to keep their solemn pledges. Two preliminary points must be noted before we examine the Treaty in detail. One is, that the Allied and Associated Govern ments are now dealing with the German people. They have always contended that their quarrel was with the rulers. We have no quarrel with the German people, said President Wilson after the American declaration of war against Germany. It was not upon their impulse that their Government acted in entering this war. It was not with their previous knowledge or approval. That people have now overthrown their autocratic and militarist rulers. The Emperor has abdicated, and the reigning dynasties have fallen. Secondly, whatever the merits or demerits of the Treaty may be, it is important to realise that it has been framed in secret. Not only the enemy, but the Allied and Associated peoples, have been excluded from any part in the process of making peace; ofdeciding, that is, upon the uses to which their colossal sacrifices were to be put. Even among the Allied Governments only a small inner ring has had a voice in the private conclave which drew up the Treaty. It is not one of those open covenants of peace, openly arrived at, which President Wilson promised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
