Dudley Bennett Collection

Dudley Bennett Collection PDF Author: Dudley Atkins Bennett
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Basic training (Military education)
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
Chiefly letters between Dudley Bennett and his parents, the majority written by his mother, Irene Bennett. The collection also relates to several generations of the extended Bennett, Atkins, Dowd, and Tuttle families. The letters of Irene Bennett provide a detailed account of life in Middletown during World War II. Letters to Dudley Bennett from other correspondents are arranged chronologically at the end of the correspondence series but those from his aunt Marion Tuttle (mother's sister) are archived separately because of their "cheek and charm". Letters from Dudley, less numerous than ones received, describe early training as a pilot and his disappointment at his eventual rejection from the program. Training bases represented include Maxwell Field (Ala.), Jefferson Barracks (Saint Louis, Mo.), Scott Field (Ill.), Chanute Field (Ill.), and Boca Raton Army Air Field (Fla.). Once overseas, Bennett spent time in England, France, and Germany. Materials relating to Dudley Bennett after the war, relate to his studies at the University of Connecticut as well as papers and plaques marking his extensive involvement in the local branch of the Salvation Army. The collection has records of Bennett's father, Earl W. Bennett's various business ventures; a small collection of correspondence between Earle and Irene Bennett from 1913-1916; and old documents from the extended Bennett, Tuttle, Dowd, and Atkins families dating back to the 1820s, many of which are illegible and come with no explanation.
