Book Description
Excerpt from With the Greeks in Thessaly This book is based on the despatches which I sent from Greece to Reuter's as their special war-correspondent. These were received with so much favour by the press and the public in this country and America, that I have been induced to embody them in a connected narrative of my experiences during the very brief but deeply interesting campaign. In the descriptions of the various engagements of which I was a witness - I had almost said in which I had taken part - there is little amplification of the originals forwarded by telegraph, and which were generally written on the field, while the picture was vivid and the atmosphere of battle was still round me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Blessed Thessaly
Author: Emma Aston
Publisher: Liverpool University Press
ISBN: 1789624274
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 520
Book Description
Thessaly was a region of great importance in the ancient Greek world, possessing both agricultural abundance and a strategic position between north and south. It presents historians with the challenge of seeing beyond traditional stereotypes (wealth and witches, horses and hospitality) that have coloured perceptions of its people from antiquity to the present day. It also presents a complex and illuminating interaction between polis and ethnos identity. In daily life, most Thessalians primarily operated within, and identified with, their specific polis; at the same time, the regional dimension – being Thessalian – was rarely out of sight for long. It manifested itself in stories told, in deities worshipped, in modes of political co-operation, in language, rituals, sites and objects. Chapter by chapter, this book follows the emergence, development and adaptation of Thessalian regional identity from the Archaic period to the early second century BC. In so doing, rather than rejecting ancient stereotypes as a mere inconvenience for the historian, it considers the constant dialogue between Thessalian self-presentation and depictions of the Thessalian character by other Greeks. It also confronts some of the prejudices and assumptions still influencing modern approaches to studying the region. All in all, the reader is invited to see Thessaly not as a region of marginal significance in Greek history, but as occupying a central role in many aspects of ancient cultural and political discourse.

The Battle of Thermopylae
Author: Rupert Matthews
Publisher: Spellmount, Limited Publishers
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 282
Book Description
"The Thermopylae Campaign was the climactic event in over 20 years of war between the mighty Persian Empire and the collection of much smaller Greek states that alone stood firm for freedom and independence. This book explains to the general reader the reality of warfare in the year 480 BC. It seeks to recreate the tactics used in the Thermopylae Campaign and to put them into the context of the time. It shows what the weapons were like and how they were used in action. It describes the tactics of the different military units involved and how these would have interacted in battle. Crucially, it takes the reader inside the minds of the commanders to explain what they did, why they did it and what they hoped to achieve."--BOOK JACKET.
