From the Global to the Local

From the Global to the Local PDF Author: Andrea Schapper
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135070059
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 279

Book Description
From the Global to the Local develops a unique perspective on human rights governance in developing countries, where the state often lacks the required resources, capacities and expertise for implementing rights. Considering how rights that have been agreed upon in the global arena of world politics are locally implemented, this book then specifically explores how they reach the local children of Bangladesh’s urban slums and poor rural areas. Andrea Schapper combines an analytical framework grounded in international relations scholarship on global governance with empirical field research methods that have their basis in sociology and anthropology. Utilising this methodology, the book examines three principles that represent a global consensus on children’s rights (the protection of children from the worst forms of child labor, providing them with primary education, and delivering basic health care services to them) to illuminating the need for local and contextual solutions to transnational issues. Exploring such concerns with vigor, this book fills a gap in the study of human rights implementation and protection and will thus be of immense interest to students of Law, of International Relations and of Development Studies.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh PDF Author: Roger J. Robinson
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 9780821342930
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 82

Book Description
"Bangladesh evokes profound, moving impressions. The country is the most densely populated state in the world. It has limited natural resources and is highly vulnerable to natural disasters. Famine is an ever-present danger... Emerging from a bloody war in 1971, the country's capacity to survive was widely doubted. But Bangladesh has survived, and has made progress in economic and social development." Despite the political traumas from 1977 to 1980, Bangladesh has made progress in economic and social development and has been transformed over the past 16 years. From the country's inception, the World Bank has been involved in Bangladesh's economic development. The International Development Association (IDA) has financed about a quarter of all foreign aid commitments. However, Bangladesh's dependence on foreign aid has raised concerns regarding sovereignty and self-reliance in the development process. This Country Assistance Review (CAR) presents the findings of an Operations Evaluation Department team that visited Bangladesh in August/September 1996. It represents a synthesis of the key findings of the evaluation. The CAR's main conclusion is that IDA's assistance to Bangladesh has been effective, and the partnership forged with the government has brought some notable successes. The lessons drawn from it are presented at a strategic level and are applicable in Bangladesh and other countries.

The Bangladesh Garment Industry and the Global Supply Chain

The Bangladesh Garment Industry and the Global Supply Chain PDF Author: Shahidur Rahman
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000397629
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 148

Book Description
This book analyzes the choices and constraints of management within the Bangladesh garment industry and how management negotiates these challenges to ensure the global garment supply chain is sustainable. Exploring the international South Asian garment industry and using middle management and the owners of Bangladeshi factories as a case study, the book assesses the limits and costs of globalization for Bangladesh, and outlines the challenges of the fast-fashion business model for the global market. It focusses on the changing dynamics of the entrepreneur class, how they manage factories and their experiences with Accord-Alliance, and the challenges of sustainability. Within these four broader themes, the author critically examines management strategies towards compliance and labour productivity, transnational governance, buyer–supplier relationships, and power dynamics. This book is the first to explore management’s perceptions of workers, buyers, and government through an analysis of four factories which demonstrate the role of mid-level management, how supervisors treat production workers, workers’ impact on innovation, welfare programmes as well as CSR policies, and the impact of COVID-19. Offering new perspectives on Bangladesh’s garment export industry, this book will be of interest to researchers in the field of policy studies, labour studies, South and South-East Asian studies, development studies, international trade, and political science.

Earthquake Engineering

Earthquake Engineering PDF Author: Sidney F. Borg
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9789971504359
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
This book is the expanded version of the earlier (first edition) text. It presents new comprehensive rational quantitative theories (utilizing fundamental energy concepts throughout) covering the entire earthquake event from the point of view of the engineer. It starts with a mathematical analysis of an underground mechanism (the earthquake), then proceeds to determinations of the timewise and spacewise variations of the fundamental engineering damage-design parameter, the ground energy. Finally, the new theories are applied to a number of typical (actual) structural and non-structural design problems. Each chapter of the first edition has now been improved and enlarged and new chapters have been added to include recent research by the author and his graduate students.
