The Songs and Travels of a Tudor Minstrel

The Songs and Travels of a Tudor Minstrel PDF Author: Andrew Taylor
Publisher: Boydell & Brewer Ltd
ISBN: 1903153395
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
A reconstruction of the life and works of a sixteenth-century minstrel, showing the tradition to be flourishing well into the Tudor period. Richard Sheale, a harper and balladeer from Tamworth, is virtually the only English minstrel whose life story is known to us in any detail. It had been thought that by the sixteenth century minstrels had generally been downgradedto the role of mere jesters. However, through a careful examination of the manuscript which Sheale almost certainly "wrote" (Bodleian Ashmole 48) and other records, the author argues that the oral tradition remained vibrant at this period, contrary to the common idea that print had by this stage destroyed traditional minstrelsy. The author shows that under the patronage of Edward Stanley, earl of Derby, and his son, from one of the most important aristocratic families in England, Sheale recited and collected ballads and travelled to and from London to market them. Amongst his repertoire was the famous Chevy Chase, which Sir Philip Sidney said moved his heart "more than witha trumpet". Sheale also composed his own verse, including a lament on being robbed of 60 on his way to London; the poem is reproduced in this volume. ANDREW TAYLOR lectures in the Department of English, University of Ottawa.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Ballad of Flodden Field: A Poem of the Xvith Century Pardon, ye poets all, I cry, My simple, rude, and rugged rhyme, Ev'n though the hill Parnassus high Presumptuously I press to climb! For what is he, with haughty style Such deeds of honour could contrive? No, not the learned Virgil great, If that on earth he was alive, That could reveal in volume short Great Howard's deeds who did excell. Though lovely print made no report, Fame would not fail the fame to tell. Or thou, O Stanley, wondrous man! Thou son of Mars! who can proclaim Thy matchless deeds? Tell me who can Paint thy just praise on wings of fame? Thy doleful daywork still shall be In Scotland curs'd with an outcry: For Hector's match this man was he, Who climbed the mount of Floddon high. What banners bravely blaz'd and borne! What standards stout brought to the ground! What worthy lords by him forlorne, That sorrow in Scotland yet doth found! Ye heav'nly power! your aid I crave! My slender muse help to awake; Grant of this work, in hand I have, A fine and lucky end may make! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An Introduction to The Gawain-Poet

An Introduction to The Gawain-Poet PDF Author: Ad Putter
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317893115
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 263

Book Description
The late 14th century produced a crop of brilliant writers: Chaucer, Langland and Gower. Their achievement was rivalled only by a series of four works generally agreed to have been written by a single northern author, known as the Gawain-Poet. This book introduces the reader to the Gawain-poet's four surviving works: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Patience, Pearl and Cleanness. The four poems are made accessible to the student by setting them in their relevant historical and cultural context and by developing some lines of critical argument. All studies are based on the author's own research and translations.
