Book Description
During the 1980s through 1990s, Washington, DC, leadership was in shambles following the arrest of Mayor Marion Barry on drug charges. When Barry was reelected as mayor after being released from prison, the outraged United States Congress slashed every cent possible from the city budget, a decision that would ultimately take revenge on the entire city. The Congresss retaliation was swift and widespread throughout the city government . . . and the Metropolitan Police Department. Congress defunding the citys metropolitan police had a devastating effect on everything from crime rates to the restructuring of the entire department. Not one cent was budgeted for the police department. Congresss view of city management echoed that of a national opinion in that a city reelecting a jailbird as their mayor deserved everything it got. Long-established hiring practices that had once made the Metropolitan Police Department a premiere agency were all but eliminated. Many times, the hiring of new officers was left to the discretion of a few persons within the agency. Cronyism was rampant, and hiring standards were lowered. The friends of some city officials were hired as police recruits even though their drug arrest convictions would have excluded them from being hired under earlier standards. During the late 1980s, one recruit class had over 40 percent of their recruit officers subjected to department disciplinary action or were terminated during their very first year of service. One academy class was embarrassed by the arrest of seven new recruits for outstanding felony warrants. Apparently, no one had bothered to check the applicants names through the National Criminal Database for outstanding warrants. Or perhaps had this been a carefully planned strategy to hire unqualified and unemployed city residents and lessen a growing unemployment problem? Either way, anyone with a prior arrest record and fortunate enough to have friends in high places could be a police officer. One high-ranking police official was heard to privately comment, Hire them now, fire them later. Operation Tarnished Shield is the third fictional story in the Bakers Dozen series of novels. This is based on an actual criminal investigation that was conducted by the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Departments Office of Professional Standards (OPS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the mid-1990s that led to an eighteen month investigation and the subsequent arrest and conviction of twelve metropolitan police officers. Had the entire operation not been hastily closed down because of the impending murder of one of their own, its certain that there would have been more officers arrested, making it a bakers dozen.

ISBN: 1035838613
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 440

Book Description
It is January 1940. Tall, broad-shouldered, and handsome, Charlie Stoker is loved by everyone. Seen by all as the man who has it all, he is tortured by the belief that he lives a lie, a double life. His religious upbringing and inborn sense of righteousness demand that he resolve his problem, but WWII intervenes. Charlie, Bobby, Harry Bateson, Billy Walters, and even mild Percy Spence vanish to serve their country. While Charlie completes his army training, Sally Spence gives birth to a beautiful daughter, Shirley, and Charlie becomes godfather to his own child. Then, the ‘phoney’ war explodes. The drama of Dunkirk is followed by the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. London is in chaos. The lives of all those associated with the Stokers are endangered by the constant threat of the never-ending air raids. With all the men absent, their families spend their nights in Anderson shelters or hiding behind black-out curtains. Somehow, stirred by Winston Churchill’s passionate speeches, they keep up their spirits and find a way for most to survive. Charlie becomes a commando officer, who endures some of the fiercest battles of the war in Europe. He is saved from near death by the French Resistance; then, later, he leads his men through the entire Italian Campaign. His experiences there teach him to see his problems in a different light. Is there, at last, a path to acceptance?

The Ouroh Trilogy

The Ouroh Trilogy PDF Author: Thomas D. Bryson
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1477245138
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 801

Book Description
There are few books that surprise their readers on every page-even fewer that show readers how to live. Boldly, the OUROH trilogy does both. Trevor and Trudy, siblings from Earth, take an unforgettable journey through these pages, a journey you will gladly take alongside them; they're the kind of inspiring characters that live and breathe on the page and live on in your mind and heart long after the story's final word. You can't help but root for and identify with them. Their journey is rich with the power of words and wishes, spoken and unspoken. It's a journey not only through time (recycled time), but past time; not only through our known universe, but past it to another, and another (Ouroh is the center of thirteen multiverses); not only through our minds and senses, but past what we've been conditioned to perceive to a whole new way of seeing and knowing. This epic tale has been created by a master storyteller and modern-day philosopher, one who understands that acknowledging life's interconnectedness and relying on present-moment awareness are the keys to true happiness. But you won't be pummeled with speeches or agendas; instead, this wisdom is skillfully woven into the narrative's fabric. Trevor and Trudy are joined by Ideas and Imagination, their Ouroh counterparts, as well as an unforgettable cast of supporting characters, including the fascinating Planimals (part plant, part animal, in a myriad of astounding varieties). Thrumming with heart-pounding tension and suspense, the story asks: Will the children save the multiverses from an errant word? Will they "right the word that went wrong"? In a time when people complain that there is nothing new under the sun, it is quite a rare achievement to discover a book unlike any other. The OUROH trilogy is a true gift indeed.

The Jews in America Trilogy

The Jews in America Trilogy PDF Author: Stephen Birmingham
Publisher: Open Road Media
ISBN: 1504038959
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 672

Book Description
Three New York Times bestsellers chronicle the rise of America’s most influential Jewish families as they transition from poor immigrants to household names. In his acclaimed trilogy, author Stephen Birmingham paints an engrossing portrait of Jewish American life from the colonial era through the twentieth century with fascinating narrative and meticulous research. The collection’s best-known book, “Our Crowd” follows nineteenth-century German immigrants with recognizable names like Loeb, Sachs, Lehman, Guggenheim, and Goldman. Turning small family businesses into institutions of finance, banking, and philanthropy, they elevated themselves from Lower East Side tenements to Park Avenue mansions. Barred from New York’s gentile elite because of their religion and humble backgrounds, they created their own exclusive group, as affluent and selective as the one that had refused them entry. The Grandees travels farther back in history to 1654, when twenty-three Sephardic Jews arrived in New York. Members of this small and insulated group—considered the first Jewish community in America—soon established themselves as wealthy businessmen and financiers. With descendants including poet Emma Lazarus, Barnard College founder Annie Nathan Meyer, and Supreme Court Justice Benjamin N. Cardozo, these families were—and still are—hugely influential in the nation’s culture, politics, and economics. In “The Rest of Us,” Birmingham documents the third major wave of Jewish immigration: Eastern Europeans who swept through Ellis Island between 1880 and 1924. These refugees from czarist Russia and Polish shtetls were considered barbaric, uneducated, and too steeped in the traditions of the “old country” to be accepted by the well-established German American Jews. But the new arrivals were tough, passionate, and determined. Their incredible rags to riches stories include those of the lives of Hollywood tycoon Samuel Goldwyn, Broadway composer Irving Berlin, makeup mogul Helena Rubenstein, and mobster Meyer Lansky. This unforgettable collection comprises a comprehensive account of the Jewish American upper class, their opulent world, and their lasting mark on American society.
