The Bachelors' Ball

The Bachelors' Ball PDF Author: Pierre Bourdieu
Publisher: Polity Press
ISBN:
Category : Bachelors
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
The enforced bachelorhood of eldest sons in traditional French rural society was a subject to which Pierre Bourdieu devoted three major articles. Here he brings them together, presenting them as stages in 'a kind of intellectual Bildungsroman' through which one can follow the development of his theory of practice.

The Bachelors' Ball

The Bachelors' Ball PDF Author: Pierre Bourdieu
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780226067506
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 205

Book Description
Over the past four decades, French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu produced one of the most imaginative and subtle bodies of social theory of the postwar era. When he died in 2002, he was considered to be the most influential sociologist in the world and a thinker on a par with Foucault and Lvi-Strauss—a public intellectual as important to his generation as Sartre was to his. Bourdieu’s final book, The Bachelors’ Ball, sees him return to Barn, the region where he grew up, to examine the gender dynamics of rural France. This personal connection adds poignancy to Bourdieu’s ethnographic account of the way the influence of urban values has precipitated a crisis for male peasants. Tied to the land through inheritance, these bachelors find themselves with little to offer the women of Barn who, like the young Bourdieu himself, abandon the country for the city in droves.

The Bachelor and Spinster Ball

The Bachelor and Spinster Ball PDF Author: Janet Gover

ISBN: 0755355156
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
Join the guests at Australia's most infamous black-tie event, The Bachelor and Spinster Ball, in Janet Gover's life-affirming novel. The perfect read for fans of Jenny Colgan and Jo Thomas. Sexy Nick, feisty Bec and dreamy Hailey all grew up together in the tiny, one-horse town of Farwell Creek. In fact, Nick and Bec were the town's teen-dream couple, until Bec made a break for it and shook the small-town dust off her heels for the big-city lights. Now she's back - but Nick doesn't have romantic feelings for her any more ... does he? Sweet, idealistic Hailey is caught between her old friends, but has too many problems of her own to be able to worry about theirs. Devastated at the loss of her parents, who died in a crash a year earlier, she's too wrapped up in her own thoughts to even think about leaving town or finding love. It will take a devastating bush-fire, a black-tie ball under the stars, and a road-trip to help all three friends work out who and what they want - and what they need. What readers are saying about THE BACHELOR AND SPINSTER BALL: 'A story of rich emotions and strong relationships. A lovely, escapist read' 'Beautifully written, the characters are easy to identify with and the author's rich description of a small place in Australia made me want to go there!' 'I absolutely loved this book and how you get to see all sides of the story. A real romance - so brilliant'

The Age of the Bachelor

The Age of the Bachelor PDF Author: Howard P. Chudacoff
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691222010
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
In this engaging new book, Howard Chudacoff describes a special and fascinating world: the urban bachelor life that took shape in the late nineteenth century, when a significant population of single men migrated to American cities. Rejecting the restraints and dependence of the nineteenth-century family, bachelors found sustenance and camaraderie in the boarding houses, saloons, pool halls, cafes, clubs, and other institutions that arose in response to their increasing numbers. Richly illustrated, anecdotal, and including a unique analysis of The National Police Gazette (the most outrageous and popular men's publication of the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century), this book is the first to describe a complex subculture that continues to affect the larger meanings of manhood and manliness in American society. The figure of the bachelor--with its emphasis on pleasure, self-indulgence, and public entertainment--was easily converted by the burgeoning consumer culture at the turn of the century into an ambiguously appealing image of masculinity. Finding an easy reception in an atmosphere of insecurity about manhood, that image has outdistanced the circumstances in which it began to flourish and far outlasted the bachelor culture that produced it. Thus, the idea of the bachelor has retained its somewhat negative but alluring connotations throughout the rest of the twentieth century. Chudacoff's concluding chapter discusses the contemporary "singles scene" now developing as the number of single people in urban centers is again increasing. By seeing bachelorhood as a stage in life for many and a permanent status for some, Chudacoff recalls a lifestyle that had a profound impact on society, evoking fear, disdain, repugnance, and at the same time a sense of romance, excitement, and freedom. The book contributes to gender history, family history, urban history, and the study of consumer culture and will appeal to anyone curious about American history and anxious to acquire a new view of a sometimes forgotten but still influential aspect of our national past.
