Europe faces a period of prolonged structural unemployment, as a result of the introduction of new high technology industries. Among the ways increasingly canvassed to cope with this are early retirement, and a shorter working week, or day. This survey, "The attitude of the working population to retirement", carried out in the nine countries of the Community at the request of the Commission's Directorate General for Employment and Social Affairs analyses European attitudes country by country to these suggestions. A sample of nearly 10,000 people has been used. The survey reveals considerable variation in view among Community member states though all are agreed that anxiety about retirement increases with age. Nevertheless there are more people in every age group expressing satisfaction at the prospect rather than anxiety. In six of the nine (including Britain) more chose shorter working hours, both in preference to better pay and to a lowering of the retirement age.
