Book Description
Excerpt from The Application of Electricity to Railway Working Within that period the mileage of wire solely devoted to the requirements of the railways of Great Britain has expanded by some 40,000 miles, and the number of instruments has been increased by no less than 80,000; resulting in a present total exceeding 100,000 miles of wire, and some 140,000 instruments. Nor does this entirely dispose of the large telegraphic interest which attaches to the railway service, for to these results should be added some 70,000 miles of wire, the property of the State, which is, at the instance of the Postmaster-General, maintained by the various railway companies. The fact that the entire railway system of the United Kingdom is now worked under the Block system will, to some extent, account for this large expansion. With what beneficial results the enormous expenditure which must have been incurred by the railway companies in the establishment of this means for the further protection of the travelling public has been attended, the Board of Trade Returns amply testify. When we realise the fact that the number of messages emanating with one of the larger English companies - that to which the Author is attached - amounted, during the year 1895, to close upon 5,000,000, and that the number of train reports exceeded 8,000,000, we are at no loss to recognise the importance of, and the need which has brought into existence, so extensive a branch of the railway industry.
