Book Description
Excerpt from The Apostolic Origin of Episcopacy Asserted, in a Series of Letters, Addressed to the Rev. Dr. Miller, Vol. 1: One of the Pastors of the United Presbyterian Churches in the City of New-York Prove, as we suppose, that no argument can he founded upon the use of the word Bishop, in favour of Episcopal superiority in the original constitution of the church, (for of that onlv he was speaking) that title being applied to Presbyters even after the government was Episcopal, then he will stand clear of contradiction, and in no other way that I can see, can he be made consistent. It certainly is but fair and candid, after a man has explicitly declared his sentiments, not to lay hold of any loose, ambi gnous expressions, and interpret them contrary to his avowed sentiments. This book certainly proves that those who drew 1t up, had obtained much more just and clear views of several important doctrines, than they possessed at the date of the former publication. But with regard to ministerial parity, their sentiments remained 11 - 11-1 changed They stillf asserted the same doctrine They say, St. Paul ponsecrated and ordained Bi-a shopstby the imposition of hands; but that there is aroeertain rule prescribed in scripture for the norm; nation, election, or\.presentation of them, [that is true]vhut that this is left to the positive laws of every cbmmunity.
