It certainly is but fair and candid, after a man has explicitly declared his sentiments, not to lay hold of any loose, ambi gnous expressions, and interpret them contrary to his avowed sentiments. It would be an easy mat ter, in this way, to make almost any writer contra dict himself; for there are few who write much as jerome did, who are always precise and definite.
