Excerpt from The Anti-Slavery Revolution in America The construction of a government for the colonies, which had declared and main tained their independence of England, began under a natural reaction. Washington, in a letter to Henry Laurens (july 10, 1782) wrote: That spirit of freedom, which, at the commencement of this contest, would have gladly sacrificed everything to the attainment of its object, has long since subsided, and every selfish passion has taken its place. It is not the public but pri vate interest which influences the genera ity of mankind, nor can the Americans any longer boast of an exception. This was, as we have said, natural; the ravages of war, and the debt created by it, must make trade paramount, and under that and the vices which follow in the train of war, the fiery lava of revolution must cool down and harden into the provisions of self-interest and the enactments of economy. A late con servative orator of New England sneered at the Declaration of Independence as the passionate manifesto of a revolutionary war, and appealed from its glittering generali ties to the wary compromises of the Con stitution it has only been amid the fires of another revolution that those glittering gen eralities have been revealed as, to use Mr. Emerson's phrase, blazing ubiquities. The great motives which prevailed to bring about the Convention of 1787, whose object was to supersede the loose articles of confedera tion and establish a more perfect Union, were apparently the greater security of all economic interests, and a more complete combination against any attempt at a re covery of the States on the part of England. Excerpt from The Anti-Slavery Cause in America: And Its Martyrs A philanthmpist named Benjamin Lundy had started, in Baltimore, the first journal in America devoted to the defence of the negro's rights; it was called the Genius of U nieersal Emancipation. Garrison read this paper, his heart was aroused at once to see a new purpose and aim of his existence, and he vowed henceforth to consecrate his life, as far as possible, to the deliverance of his enslaved fellow-countrym en. About this time he was employed at Bennington, in the state of Vermont, as editor to a paper, called The Spirit of the Times, which was started mainly to pro mote the election to Congress of John Quincy Adams, - but the editor likewise advocated temperance, peace, moral reforms, and the abolition of slavery in its columns; and he also took measures to procure from the state a petition against slavery, which was very numerously signed. When these efforts became known to Benjamin Lundy, he visited this talented and ener getic cc-worker, and at once offered him a partnership in his paper, entreating him to help in this great work; and as a ready vent for the hatred of slavery which burned within him, Garrison promptly consented. Excerpt from The Dual Revolutions: Anti-Slavery and Pro-Slavery He who shall succeed in writing a perfect history of American Abolitionism, including its last great triumph, under Mr. Lincoln's new government - he, who shall succeed in a perfect analysis of the measures and teachings of that pestilent brood of fanatics and madmen, and shall trace out and record their efforts to overthrow the government of the Union, will merit the applause of his country, and the approbation of posterity. It is not the purpose of these few pages to accomplish this formidable work. They are designed only as a sort of reconnoissance - a preliminary survey of the ground - and perhaps, to remove some of the obstructions which impede the progress of historical and critical investigation. It is an ungrateful task; because it involves the exposure of measures and combinations, not only discreditable to the immediate parties thereto, but to the whole American people, who, at least, have been silent witnesses of their progress. The seat of these infamous combinations is in New England. It is New England that has sent down that horde of Appenine wolves, which have torn the Union to atoms, and are now feeding on its vitals. That the great public is blameless, cannot be maintained. That they are, to a certain extent, responsible for the evils which now afflict the nation, no rational mind will deny. Their crime is that of submission, rather than of aggression; - that of being deceived and misled, rather than of willful heresy to the Union, and dishonest refusal to fulfill its obligations. We have caused the rebellion. 1. By subverting the government. 2. By our overbearing, insolent and tyrannizing tendencies. A great people we are; it required a great people to do what we have done, to sacrifice what we have sacrificed, in blood and money. Our merits are great, and our errors and crimes are great. I never thought our people as perfect as they thought themselves. We had an admirable system of labor and laws. Under these, capital was widely distributed, energy concentrated, and the interests of the great body of the people promoted. This distribution of wealth energized the nation and made it capable of greater acts and greater sacrifices, than any other.
