Excerpt from The Ancient History of the Egyptians, Medes and Persians, Carthaginians, Macedonians, Assyrians, Babylonians, and Grecians, Vol. 3 of 8 The war being resolved upon *3 Xerxes, that he might omit nothing which could contribute to the success of his undertaking, entered into a confederacy with the Carthaginians, who were at that time the most potent people of the West, and made an agree ment with them, that whilst the Persian forces should attack Greece, the Carthaginians should fall upon the Grecian colonies that were settled in Sicily and Italy, in order to hinder them from coming to the aid of the other Grecians. The Carthaginians made A milcar their general, who did not content himself with raising as many troops as he could in Africa, but with the money that Xerxes had sent him, engaged a great number of soldiers out of Spain, Gaul, and Italy, in his service; so that he collected an army of three hundred thousand men, and a proportionate number of ships, in order to execute the projects and stipulations of the league. Book Description
Excerpt from The Ancient History of the Egyptians, Carthaginians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medes and Persians, Macedonians, and Grecians, Vol. 8 of 8 On his return to Jerusalem, Sosius and he having joined their forces, pressed the siege in concert with the utmost vigour, and with a very numerous army, which amounted to at least men. The place, however, held out against them many months with exceeding resolution 3 and if the besieged had been as ex pert in the art of war and the defence of places as they were brave and resolute, it would not perhaps have been taken 3 but the Romans, who' were much better skilled in those things than them, carried the place at length, after a siege of something more than six months. A History of the Ancient World, Vol. 1 of 3 PDF Author: Philip Smith
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781451004021
Category : History

Pages : 604

Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Ancient World, Vol. 1 of 3: From the Earliest Records to the Fall of the Western Empire Such a work, to be really useful, must be condensed into a moderate compass; else the powers Of the writer would be frit tered away, and the attention of the reader wearied out, by an overwhelming bulk, filled up with microscopic details. The more striking facts of history, - the rise and fall of empires, - the achievements of warriors and heroes, - the struggles of peoples for their rights and freedom, - the conflict between priestcraft and religious liberty, - must needs stand out on the canvas of such a picture with the prominence they claim in the world itself. But they will not divert our attention from the more quiet and influ ential working of science and art, social progress and individual thought, - the living seed sown, and the fruit borne, in the field broken up by those outward changes.
