Joseph Schaeffer (d.1757) immigrated from the Palatinate of Germany to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania during or before 1724. John Shaffer (1745-1835), his grandson, moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia and then to Mecklenburg (now Cabarrus) County, North Carolina, married Mary Blackwelder about 1769, served in the Revolutionary War, and moved (via Tennessee and Missouri) to Randolph County, Arkansas.
