Genera Palmarum PDF Author: John Dransfield
Publisher: International Palm Society
ISBN:
Category : Nature

Book Description
"Palms are the symbols of the tropics. They are the most distinctive of all flowering plants, and yet their diversity of form and ecology is astounding. A family of Superlatives, the palms boast the longest leaf the longest unhrauched aerial steins, the biggest inflorescences and the largest seed in the plant kingdom. They play a vital role in economies throughout the world, supplying major traded commodities such as oils, starch and sugar, and are significant in the global horticultural industry. They also provide countless resources to local communities at the subsistence level." "The scientific interest of the family encompasses many aspects, including their copious fossil record, evolution, ecology and natural history. Current research on the relationships among palms has culminated in a new phylogenetic classification of the family, which forms the basis of Genera Palmarum: The Evolution and Classification of Palms. This encyclopaedic account of the family provides a new standard reference to underpin all palm studies."--BOOK JACKET.

ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 506

Book Description
This book provides an in-depth analysis of research done in the past 30 years on the anatomy and morphology of palms, presenting an integrated view of this highly distinctive plant form. The work goes beyond simple description to show the interrelationships between functional processes that are usually treated independently. Functional morphology and development are emphasized and each organ of the plant is examined. Readers will find a comprehensive, systematic picture of how the palm "works" through the volume's in-depth examination of the plant's life cycle, as well as convenient summaries of recent literature on palm biology, and discussion of the palm's relationship to other flowering plants.

The Anatomy of Palms

The Anatomy of Palms PDF Author: Philip Barry Tomlinson
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780191810077
Category : Palms
Languages : en
Pages : 251

Book Description
Palms are an economically important group of plants and support major agronomic and horticultural industries, quite apart from their regional use in the cultures of many tropical countries as sources of food, fibre, and building materials. They range widely in size, life form, and habitat. This book provides a survey of the structure and vegetative anatomy of members of the palm family (Arecaceae or Palmae) and uses the most recent molecular phylogenetic treatment of the family as the basis for interpreting the systematic and ecological significance of anatomical characters.

Palms of controversies

Palms of controversies PDF Author: Alain Rival
Publisher: CIFOR
ISBN: 6021504410
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 68

Book Description
The rapid development of oil palm cultivation feeds many social issues such as biodiversity, deforestation, food habits or ethical investments. How can this palm be viewed as a ‘miracle plant’ by both the agro-food industry in the North and farmers in the tropical zone, but a serious ecological threat by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for the environment or rights of local indigenous peoples? In the present book the authors – a biologist and an agricultural economist- describe a global and complex tropical sector, for which the interests of the many different stakeholders are often antagonistic. Oil palm has become emblematic of recent changes in North-South relationship in agricultural development. Indeed, palm oil is produced and consumed in the South; its trade is driven by emerging countries, although the major part of its transformations is made in the North that still hosts the largest multinational agro industries. It is also in the North that the sector is challenged on ethical and environmental issues. Public controversy over palm oil is often opinionated and it is fed by definitive and sometimes exaggerated statements. Researchers are conveying a more nuanced speech, which is supported by scientific data and a shared field experience. Their work helps in building a more balanced view, moving attention to the South, the region of exclusive production and major consumption of palm oil.
