Book Description
Excerpt from The Analysis of Aluminum-Copper Alloys The extensive manufacture of automobiles, motor-cycles, and airships has created a demand for materials which are strong and light and will satisfy the varied requirements in vehicles of these types. Many kinds of special steels and other alloys have been tried for these purposes and at the present time a large number of alloys are used in the construction of a single vehicle. The special steels generally meet the requirement of strength but not that of lightness. There is, however, an exception to the latter in the case of a few steels which have an unusually great tensile strength. In these cases a given weight of steel will give a greater strength than an equal weight of an aluminum alloy. The requirement of lightness has been met largely by alloys of aluminum with various metals which are intended to increase the strength without materially increasing the weight of the alloys. The Analysis of Non-Ferrous Alloys (Classic Reprint)

The Analysis of Non-Ferrous Alloys (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Fred Ibbotson
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780332917689
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 260

Book Description
Excerpt from The Analysis of Non-Ferrous Alloys The first edition of this book was published just as the Great War commenced. The war did a great deal to encourage the accurate control of metals by means of chemical analysis, and the non -ferrous metals and alloys experienced this stimulus to a marked extent. In addition, the war brought to the front many and various alloys which previously had been either unknown or very little used. A notable example of this effect was the greatly extended of the light alloys of aluminium. Despite this dual develop ment in the field occupied by the non-ferrous alloys, it cannot be said that there was any concomitant development in the methods employed in their analysis. Some methods were brought forward, but the advance was not startling. The main duty, therefore, of the authors in presenting a new edition is to provide the best analytical methods for those new alloys that have been brought into prominence. They have therefore added to the book methods for the analysis of aluminium and its light alloys, and since the separation of aluminium and zinc presents the most difficult problem in the analysis of such alloys, they have dealt with this separation at some length in a separate chapter. Other alloys which now call for adequate treatment are mainly those of nickel. The principal alloys of this metal are those with copper and those with chromium and iron. Methods for the analysis of all these alloys have been included in this new edition. The other notable additions deal with the determination of the special elements, such as iron or manganese, that are added to the copper-zinc and copper tin alloys in order to give these alloys mechanical properties of special value. Preparation of Light Aluminum-Copper Casting Alloys (Classic Reprint)

Preparation of Light Aluminum-Copper Casting Alloys (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: R. J. Anderson

Book Description
Excerpt from Preparation of Light Aluminum-Copper Casting Alloys Strictly speaking, the commercial No. 12 alloy is not a simple binary alloy in most foundries, because it contains appreciable amounts of impurities; increasing amounts of iron markedly affect the properties of the alloy. If the iron content is high (it often is per cent), the alloy should be regarded as a ternary aluminum-copper iron alloy. The iron content of most of the N o. 12 alloy cast to-day is 1 to per cent, because scrap high in iron is used in making up melting charges, and because much of the remelted (secondary) alu minum pig is high in iron. Unless the foundryman buys his melt ing materials on analysis and excludes materials high in impurities, the resultant castings can not be expected to approach 92: 8 aluminum copper in composition, because No. 12 pig as marketed by refiners may run high in iron. The results of chemical analyses of samples from a number of heats of No. 12 alloy on an aircraft-crankcase job cast under Government specifications are shown in Table 1. The analyses represent. Results on samples selected at various intervals during about three months' production. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Analysis of Copper

Book Description
Excerpt from The Analysis of Copper: And Its Ores and Alloys NO attempt is made to give a complete list of apparatus used in metallurgical analysis but a few special improvements which have been adopted in large copper laboratories to facilitate rapid work are described. All apparatus should be suited to the character of the work, whether it be ore-assaying or the delicate estimation of traces Of impurities in refined metal, an Operation in which results are calculated to a ten-thousandth of One per cent, or one more decimal place than is usual in report ing tests Of iron and steel. TO permit this degree Of accuracy in the examination of refined copper, the bulk of final solutions and the size of filter papers and containers should be kept as small as possible without undue sacrifice Of speed. Book Description
Excerpt from Constitution and Metallography of Aluminum and Its Light Alloys With Copper and With Magnesium The most complete investigations of the equilibrium of binary alloys of silicon and aluminum were made by Frankel 4 and Roberts 5 the latter investigation confirming the first one in prae tically all respects. According to these investigations no com pound is formed in this series; the two elements form a_ eutectic at about I 5 per cent silicon and 576 C; the solubility of silicon in aluminum is given as less than ol 5 per cent. Book Description
Excerpt from The Properties of Some Copper Alloys The introduction of lead into some of these alloys was tried with a specific object, but they were found to be very laminated. The lead appears to occur in the free state in the metal in the form of long strings of small globules. This structure is illustrated in fig. 4 (plate 1) under a magnification Of 150 diameters. This figure represents an alloy containing 5 per cent. Manganese and 1 per Cent. Of lead. The specimen has been photographed without etching. A comparison of Table II. With Table I. Shows that the alloys have in no case such remarkable properties as those which have been referred to in connection with Table I., but attention may be drawn to the alloy (no. 15) containing 3 per cent. Manganese and 10 per cent. Zinc, which, in the cold rolled condition, has a tensile strength of 47 tons per square inch, With 3 per cent. Elongation, and in the annealed condition a tensile strength of 23 tons per square inch, with 35 per cent. Elongation.
