Excerpt: ... ciesof the Sweetwater, or. the same sort we used to cultivate in Swisserland, about thirty 5'ears ago, --an early kind, but of small increase; while on the opposite, or left shore of the river, they had a species called the Gouet or Gowet, very prolific, but, indifferent for wine. They told me, that the Hollanders used to buy the grapes of those vineyards and carry them to Holland, for which they often paid a French crown per gallon; while, on the left side, the wine sells for a few cents only--and, for fear, some of that cheap sort should be mixed, they keep as many Clerks, as they have carriers of the grapes, from the vineyard to the press, to have them overseen all the time. I had drank some of that wine at Rotterdam; and as 1 found it not answering its renown, I took a small bottle in my bag, of some I made in Swisserland; when I came to Maestrickt, and at Mentz, I called for a bottle of Old Hock, for which I had to pay one French crown, and compared it with my own, which was found to be nearly of the same quality, but much better and stronger, although only 10 months old, and carried three hundred miles in the hottest of the summer, in a pint bottle. If the navigation of the Rhine was as free as that of the Mississippi, the Swiss, could furnish Holland with the best of of Old Hock, for about the fifth of the price, but the Powers who rule along the Rhine, keep that market for their own subjects; there are vines along the Rhine as far north as the Boon. "During election years in the early 1800s, touring politicians would often stop at Vevay in an effort to gather votes. On one such occasion the governor, Jonathan Jennings, was visiting Vevay with his entourage. They all stopped at Father Morerod's home to taste some of his wine. The governor and one or two others from abroad, being unaccustomed to wine, became considerably befuddled, as did some of the 'Vevay boys.' The way back to town was blocked by a large growth of dog fennel, a yellow flowering weed. The politicians passed through this field wearing white trousers and shirts. In their confused condition they soon emerged and presented to the townsfolk an amusing spectacle of the governor and fellow dignitaries wearing yellow pants and yellow spotted vests." -- From Indiana Wine: A History John James Dufour arrived in America in 1796, looking for land for a colony of 'vinedressers.' They first settled in Kentucky, but then purchased land in the Indiana Territory on the north bank of the Ohio River. Here, in the town they called Vevay, the Swiss winegrowers successfully produced America's first commercial wines. In Indiana Wine, a richly anecdotal history of wine production in Indiana, James L. and John J. Butler relate a vintage story of early triumph, followed by precipitous decline, and ending in present-day success. Though the economic decline of the 1820s ended the first flowering of Indiana vineyards, John James Dufour continued his work, and in 1826 he published the first book written about American grape growing and winemaking. Thereafter the heart of America's wine production was centered near Cincinnati, Ohio. That industry collapsed in the 1870s, but small wineries could still be found scattered across southern Indiana. With the coming of Prohibition, the idea of Indiana wine was lost. It was not until the passing of the "Small Winery" law in 1971 that winemaking began anew in the state. Today some 25 wineries, large and small, produce a wide variety of Indiana wine.

This volume collects the most important writings on viticulture by Nicholas Herbemont (1771-1839), who is widely considered the finest practicing winemaker of the early United States. Included are his two major treatises on viticulture, thirty-one other published pieces on vine growing and wine making, and essays that outline his agrarian philosophy. Over the course of his career, Herbemont cultivated more than three hundred varieties of grapes in a garden the size of a city block in Columbia, South Carolina, and in a vineyard at his plantation, Palmyra, just outside the city. Born in France, Herbemont carefully tested the most widely held methods of growing, pruning, processing, and fermentation in use in Europe to see which proved effective in the southern environment. His treatise "Wine Making," first published in the American Farmer in 1833, became for a generation the most widely read and reliable American guide to the art of producing potable vintage. David S. Shields, in his introductory essay, positions Herbemont not only as important to the history of viticulture in America but also as a notable proponent of agricultural reform in the South. Herbemont advocated such practices as crop rotation and soil replenishment and was an outspoken critic of slave-based cotton culture.
