Excerpt from The American Indian as a Product of Environment: With Special Reference to the Pueblos The fundamental thoughts in this volume were offered some time ago as a thesis for a degree from the University of Colorado. Changed as to arrangement of subject matter and increased to several times its original length, the material is now presented in book form, with the hope that it may be of some service in helping to keep alive an interest in that race which is so rapidly losing its identity. Written during short and widely separated intervals of time, covering more than a half-dozen years of the busy life of a schoolmaster, it is not surprising if the work shows defects naturally resulting from the interruptions. Thoughts begotten and expressed under such disadvantages are likely to lack continuity and completeness. In the work there is no attempt at profundity or exhaustiveness. There is only an effort to set forth a few of the more noticeable characteristics of primitive life - especially primitive life in the Southwest - relating to environment. Many interesting phases of Pueblo ethnology bearing on the main subject are merely touched upon, others entirely omitted. During the nineteenth century, Americans looked to the eventual civilization and assimilation of Native Americans through a process of removal, reservation, and directed culture change. Policies for directed subsistence change and incorporation had far-reaching social and environmental consequences for native peoples and native lands. This study explores the experiences of three groups--Northern Utes, Hupas, and Tohono O'odhams--with settled reservation and allotted agriculture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Each group inhabited a different environment, and their cultural traditions reflected distinct subsistence adaptations to life in the western United States. Each experienced the full weight of federal agrarian policy yet responded differently, in culturally consistent ways, to subsistence change and the resulting social and environmental consequences. Attempts to establish successful agricultural economies ultimately failed as each group reproduced their own cultural values in a diminished and rapidly changing environment. In the end, such policies and agrarian experiences left Indian farmers marginally incorporated and economically dependent.
