The Amber Witch is a German novel published by Wilhelm Meinhold (1797–1851) in 1838. Its German title is Maria Schweidler, die Bernsteinhexe. The novel was originally published as a literary hoax which purported to be an actual 17th-century chronicle. Meinhold later admitted to the hoax but had some difficulty in proving that he was its author. In 1844, it was published in Britain as The Amber Witch in two English translations: one by E. A. Friedlander and another, more enduring, translation by Lucie, Lady Duff-Gordon. Lady Duff Gordon's translation was very popular with the Victorians and went through numerous editions, including a luxurious one in 1895 illustrated by Philip Burne-Jones. The novel was a favourite of Oscar Wilde's when he was a boy, and in 1861 it was made into an opera, The Amber Witch, composed by William Vincent Wallace. Wallace's opera has faded into obscurity, but the novel on which it was based has continued to be republished, both on its own and in anthologies. The story is set during the Thirty Years' War. The purported author, Reverend Abraham Schweidler, almost loses his only child, Maria, to a plot by a rejected suitor, Sheriff Appelmann, who has accused Maria of practicing witchcraft. In this he was aided by an evil and jealous woman of the neighborhood. After a trial and under threat of the most dire torture, Maria, wholly innocent of the crime, confesses. While on her way to the stake, she is rescued by a courageous young nobleman who loves her and who exposes the evil plot against her.

Johannes Wilhelm Meinhold (27. Februar 1797 in Netzelkow auf Usedom - 30. November 1851 in Charlottenburg) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, Doktor der Theologie und Pfarrer. Maria Schweidler, die Bernsteinhexe gilt als der wichtigste Roman von Wilhelm Meinhold. Die im Jahr 1843 erstmals veröffentlichte Erzählung ist eine Verarbeitung von Meinholds Pfarrerstochter zu Coserow (1826) und versteht sich als zeithistorisch getreue Widerspiegelung der Verhältnisse im Dreißigjährigen Krieg. Meinhold gab zunächst vor, dem Buch liege ein Manuskriptfund aus dem 17. Jahrhundert zugrunde. Erst später wurden seine Verfasserschaft und der rein fiktionale Charakter des Werkes offenbar.In den Jahren 1841 und 1842 veröffentlichte Meinhold Auszüge aus dem vorgeblichen Manuskriptfund in dem Periodikum Christoterpe. Preußenkönig Friedrich Wilhelm IV. wurde auf die angeblich 200 Jahre alte Quelle aufmerksam, und forderte am 16. April 1842 das gesamte Manuskript an. Meinhold musste seinem König die eigene Urheberschaft einräumen. Der König selbst, der den Pfarrer seit seiner Zeit als Kronprinz persönlich kannte, veranlasste 1843 den Druck nebst täuschendem Vorwort.Das Brandschatzen der kaiserlichen Truppen während des Dreißigjährigen Kriegs bringt Leid und Elend über die Menschen auf der Insel Usedom. Der Koserower Pfarrer Abraham Schweidler und seine Tochter Maria versuchen die Not zu lindern, indem sie den von Maria im Streckelsberg gefundenen Bernstein verkaufen, und von dem Geld Brot für die hungernden Koserower erwerben. Maria wird vom Amtshauptmann Appelmann begehrt und bedrängt, die 15-Jährige weist ihn jedoch ab. Appelmann benutzt - um sie sich doch noch gefügig zu machen - daraufhin den für die Dorfbewohner unerklärlichen Geldbesitz Marias als Grund, sie der Hexerei zu bezichtigen, und unter den Ritualen der Hexenverfolgung Folter und Qualen erleiden zu lassen. Reverend Johann Wilhelm Meinhold (1797- 1851) who wrote under the pseudonym Abraham Schweidler, was a German pastor and author. In 1813 he attended the University of Greifswald and then in 1820 he became the rector of the Town School of Usedom. In 1821 he became a pastor of Coserow in Usedom. In the 1840s he claimed to have discovered the manuscript of another minister, Abraham Schweidler, among the rubbish in the choir in the old Coserow Church. This was the story of Mary Schweidler: The Amber Witch (1843) described as "the most interesting trial for witchcraft ever known." His other works include Sidonia Von Bork die Klosterhexe.
