Book Description
Excerpt from The Altus of St. Columba The work in which the editor is often engaged has suggested to him that there may be many persons who will hail with pleasure a new and handy edition of the Altus of St. Columba, as well from veneration for the memory of the author, as from appreciation of the intrinsic merits of the work and of its interest as a specimen of the antient Celtic Latin poetry. What follows does not pretend to offer a critical text, as the object is to call attention to the great hymn itself, rather than to the minor peculiarities of its form. The spelling is therefore given in its ordinary shape, and one or two corrections have been made of what seem to be simply copyists' blunders. Some conjectural emendations are suggested in the notes. The text has been taken from the (unhappily uncompleted) edition of the Liber Hymnorum, prepared for the Irish Archaeological and Celtic Society, by the late Dr. Todd, who includes in his notes a reprint of Colgan's edition of the Capitula now missing in the Codex he used; and the information and observations contained in his notes have been freely used in preparing the present edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works."

Stupendous as the works of creation and providence are, they are, to the work of re demption, but as the scaffolding to the build ing - inferior in their nature, and very tem porary in their duration. The grand design of the creation of this inferior world, and of the providence of God towards it, is to be subservient to the rearing of the glorious and eternal building of salvation. Whenever the building of salvation is completed, the works of creation will be dissolved and laid aside. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of St. Columba, Founder of Hy Annals, which, with scrupulous fidelity, record the year of his death; and the Calendars, which, with equal exactness, tell the day of the month on which it occurred, and name his church; and, on the other, the Life, which too often bids defiance to truth, reason, and decency, and, instead of history, presents a Specimen of the meanest fiction. The early Bollandists printed many of these compositions, but sub ject to strong protest; the later editors have, in many cases, exercised their own discretion more summarily, and substituted Acts for Lives.
