Book Description
Excerpt from The Allied Countries and the Jews The addresses collected in this little book were delivered at the Sabbath morning Services of Temple Emanu-El during the autumn and early winter of 1917-18. I tried to give a birds eye view of the relation of the Jews to the several countries with which America is now associated in the War for the defense of democracy. Also, I tried to point out how intimately the advance of democracy has been connected with the improvement of the lot of the Jew. Forming part of Divine Services, the addresses had to be short, but I hope they contained enough to illumine the subject and to stimulate thought, if not further study, as well as patriotic action. In the present form, the substance is offered of the spoken addresses. The address on Russia may seem more hopeful than the situation today would warrant. Right now, unfortunately, chaos reigns in Russia, and the Jews are said to suffer terribly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
"They, hearing History speak, of what men were, And have become, are wise."--George Meredith "To the series of published sermons of Dr. H. G. Enelow, Rabbi of the Temple Emanu-El of New York City, is now added a useful historical review called 'The Allied Countries and the Jews.' The sections of this little volume comprise addresses originally delivered at the Sabbath morning services of Temple Emanu-El during the autumn and early winter of 1917-1918. D. Enelow states that his purpose has been to give a bird's-eye view of the relation of the Jews to the several countries with which America is now associated in the war for the defense of democracy. He also points out how intimately the advance of democracy has been connected with the improvement of the lot of the Jew. In particular, the fortunes of the Jews in France, England, Russia, and Italy are discussed, with additional sections on Palestine and the Jews, America and the Jews, and the possible effect of the war on the future of Jews....The reader will perhaps turn with particular interest to the address in which Dr. Enelow discusses the relation to the Jews to Palestine. He will find that this section, like the others, is forcefully and carefully worded, that there is a perspicuous presentation of facts, but that there is more besides. Dr. Enelow here touches on an issue, and makes his own position clear." -The Maccaban: A Magazine of Jewish Life and Letters CONTENTS Preface I. France and the Jews October 6, 1917 II. Book Description
The Allied Countries And The Jews This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

World War I and the Jews

Book Description
World War I utterly transformed the lives of Jews around the world: it allowed them to display their patriotism, to dispel antisemitic myths about Jewish cowardice, and to fight for Jewish rights. Yet Jews also suffered as refugees and deportees, at times catastrophically. And in the aftermath of the war, the replacement of the Habsburg Monarchy and the Russian and Ottoman Empires with a system of nation-states confronted Jews with a new set of challenges. This book provides a fascinating survey of the ways in which Jewish communities participated in and were changed by the Great War, focusing on the dramatic circumstances they faced in Europe, North America, and the Middle East during and after the conflict.
