After Dark
Author: Wilkie Wilkie Collins
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 130
Book Description
After Dark is Wilkie Collins's first collection of six short stories, published in 1856. Collins provides a narrative framework, 'Leaves from Leah's Diary', set in 1827. Leah Kerby's husband, William, is a poor travelling portrait-painter forced to abandon his profession for six months in order to save his sight. Leah realises that if she acts as amanuensis William can support them by turning author. This situation may have been prompted by a period of eye-trouble suffered by Collins's father. In the preface to After Dark, Collins also acknowledges the painter W. S. Herrick as his source for the facts on which 'A Terribly Strange Bed' and 'The Yellow Mask' are based.

Everyday Folks, Volume 2
Author: Billy P. Jones
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 1532082967
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 119
Book Description
Set in a 21st century South Florida, Everyday Folks: A Short Story Collection, is a journey into the lives of everyday people. The eighteen-story collection provides an earnest and (at times) humorous outlook about life. In “Beware of Gremlins”, an employee deals with the maniacal tendencies of a supervisor. In “Waiting for an Appointment”, a young man’s visit to the doctor proves to be anything other than regular. In “Miccosukee”, a mother and daughter’s encounter with a celebrity makes for a laughable bonding experience. In “Near the Shore’s Edge”, a middle-aged man chooses to make the ultimate decision that may change his life. For 15 years, Everyday Folks has delivered fictional, short stories about everyday people who experience life’s challenges, opportunities, or complexities... in ways only the common people will understand

Book Description
After Dark is Wilkie Collins's first collection of six short stories, published in 1856. The book is a series of tales supposed to be told to poor travelling portrait-painter, William Kerby, who is forced to abandon his profession for six months in order to save his sight.Collins provides a narrative framework, which tells us how the painter came to think of publishing the stories, (Kerby's wife Leah realizes that if she acts as amanuensis William can support them by turning author), how they were collected (from the people who 'sat' for him to have their portraits painted) and descriptions of the circumstances under which the tales were told. The tales are stories of adventure, well varied, and often striking in the incidents, or with thrilling situations; and are as pleasant reading as a novel reader could desire.
