Book Description
Excerpt from The Adventures of My Life, Vol. 2 of 2 The naval department's ignorance, therefore, had the effect of applying to the least guilty - or, to be exact, those who got off with the lightest sentences - a much more rigorous punishment than to the others; because they were deprived of all communication with the outside world, whilst we were within reach of news, and able to enter into negotiations with the captains of any foreign vessels coming into the port of Noumea, should an opportunity of doing so present itself. Knowing just about as little as our official naval men of the topography of the Antipodes, and not exactly understanding what was meant by a fortified place, I imagined myself buried away in a prison built upon a rock, the descent from which would be a most arduous task. Still, as only the dead never return, I accepted my incarceration with a light heart, and with the h0pe of abridging its duration to the best of my ability. Book Description
Book Description
Excerpt from The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Vol. 2 When I came to my castle (for so I think I called it ever after this), I ed into it like one pur sued; whether I went over by the ladder, as first contrived, or went in at the hole in the rock, which I had called a door, I cannot remember; no, nor could I remember the next morning; for never frightened hare ed to cover or fox to earth with more terror of mind than I to this retreat. Book Description
Excerpt from My Life, Vol. 2 of 3 The detachment to which I was ordered off, was quartered in a small town adjoining the mountains, and stationed there to protect half a-dozen gaugers, who were waging war against illicit whiskey. It consisted of two companies one was commanded by Captain o'moore, and he was mad; the other by Captain Daly, and he was married. Of the subalterns, two were sick and absent, and the other twain sent from head-quarters, being, as the colonel considered, unsuited for the corps. One drank water, kept Lent, played the fiddle, and professed anti duelling principles the other, because the com ruander disliked him for some cause with which we were unacquainted; he was, they said, re served and unsocial, and, from his brusque man ners and cynical disposition, generally unp0pu lar. My Roving Life, 1895, Vol. 2 PDF Author: Joseph Alonzo Stuart

Book Description
Excerpt from My Roving Life, 1895, Vol. 2: A Diary of Travels and Adventures by Sea and Land, During Peace and War This account of the roving portion of my life is the result of a desire on the part of each of my children to possess a copy of my diaries kept during my wanderings. When I concluded at the age of sixty-six years to put my diary into type I thought I would preface it with a few pages of my ancestral record. That record, after three years of search, filled nearly two-hundred pages, which I put into a separate work on "The Duncan Stuart Family; Our Branch and Its Connections." In that I gave a short account of other portions of my life, reserving to these volume an account of my roamings. The typography and press-work have been my own work (except the press-work of the half-tones, as my little 4x6 press had not the requisite strength for a halftone impression.) Now that the work is finished I am past seventy years old, and I trust that the typography will meet Jenient criticism from the reader on that score. Trusting that my mistakes in life may be avoided by my descendants I present this record to them with my love.
