He is not disappointed when a special car guarded by troops is added to the train, said to be carrying the remains of a great Mandarin. Unfortunately the train must travel through a large part of China that is controlled by unscrupulous robber-chiefs. Before the journey is over, Claudius finds his hero.

Claudius Bombarnac: The Adventures of a Special Correspondent PDF Author: Jules Verne
Publisher: Jazzybee Verlag
ISBN: 3849646300
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 321

Book Description
The ubiquitous interviewer has been chosen as the motif of this feat of Jules Verne's imagination, and in the company of Claudius Bombarnac, special correspondent of the Twentieth Century, the reader has the full advantage of the romancer's opportunities. The shadowy and unknown regions of Central Asia, or the boundary land between Europe and that continent, are rapidly passed on the Grand Transasiatic Railway, which the author's magic wand speedily makes ready for use. The strange sights and experiences with which the book is crammed may or may not be true, nor can they easily be tested by the critic. He is fain to accept what Bombarnac, with the special correspondent's characteristic veracity, chooses to tell him. As the story is too full of detail to be told in a line or two, we must leave our readers to gather its wonders for himself. They are, we may assure him, inferior to none of the author's previous efforts in that direction.

Special Correspondence and the Newspaper Press in Victorian Print Culture, 1850–1886

Special Correspondence and the Newspaper Press in Victorian Print Culture, 1850–1886 PDF Author: Catherine Waters
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030038610
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
This book analyses the significance of the special correspondent as a new journalistic role in Victorian print culture, within the context of developments in the periodical press, throughout the second half of the nineteenth century. Examining the graphic reportage produced by the first generation of these pioneering journalists, through a series of thematic case studies, it considers individual correspondents and their stories, and the ways in which they contributed to, and were shaped by, the broader media landscape. While commonly associated with the reportage of war, special correspondents were in fact tasked with routinely chronicling all manner of topical events at home and abroad. What distinguished the work of these journalists was their effort to ‘picture’ the news, to transport readers imaginatively to the events described. While criticised by some for its sensationalism, special correspondence brought the world closer, shrinking space and time, and helping to create our modern news culture.
