The Action of Intense Optical Radiation on Matter
Interaction Between Intense Optical Radiation and Matter

Pages : 177
Book Description
The report describes a study of the nonlinear absorption properties of a number of the organic dye molecules which have been widely used in conjunction with ruby lasers. The dominant characteristic of this nonlinear behavior is a reduction in the optical transmission of a dye sample when irradiated with intense laser light. The three dye molecules studies are cryptocyanine, metalfree phthalocyanine, and chloroaluminum phthalocyanine, which were dissolved in a variety of solvents. The primary photophysical processes of polyatomic molecules are discussed. Several excited-state lifetime of the three molecules have been determined experimentally. The saturation of molecular absorption for these three molecules is analyzed on the basis of a rate equation approach to a simple three-level model plus excited-state absorptions. The general characteristics of dye Q-switched laser pulse evolution are also discussed and experiments are described which were performed to study the nature of the spectral hole-burning responsible for frequency-locking between different lasers. Also research on photon-induced breakdown of gases due to inverse Bremsstrahlung is very briefly summerized. (Author).

Interaction of Radiation with Matter
Author: Hooshang Nikjoo
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1439853576
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 369
Book Description
Interaction of Radiation with Matter focuses on the physics of the interactions of ionizing radiation in living matter and the Monte Carlo simulation of radiation tracks. Clearly progressing from an elementary level to the state of the art, the text explores the classical physics of track description as well as modern aspects based on condensed matter physics. The first section of the book discusses the fundamentals of the radiation field. In the second section, the authors describe the cross sections for electrons and heavy ions—the most important information needed for simulating radiation track at the molecular level. The third section details the inelastic scattering and energy loss of charged particles in condensed media, particularly liquid water. The final section contains a large number of questions and problems to reinforce learning. Designed for radiation interaction courses, this textbook is the ideal platform for teaching students in medical/health physics and nuclear engineering. It gives students a solid grounding in the physical understanding of radiation track structure in living matter, enabling them to pursue further work in radiological physics and radiation dosimetry.

Particle Physics Reference Library
Author: Christian W. Fabjan
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030353184
Category : Elementary particles (Physics).
Languages : en
Pages : 1083
Book Description
This second open access volume of the handbook series deals with detectors, large experimental facilities and data handling, both for accelerator and non-accelerator based experiments. It also covers applications in medicine and life sciences. A joint CERN-Springer initiative, the "Particle Physics Reference Library" provides revised and updated contributions based on previously published material in the well-known Landolt-Boernstein series on particle physics, accelerators and detectors (volumes 21A, B1,B2,C), which took stock of the field approximately one decade ago. Central to this new initiative is publication under full open access

Handbook of Particle Detection and Imaging
Author: Claus Grupen
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642132715
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1251
Book Description
The handbook centers on detection techniques in the field of particle physics, medical imaging and related subjects. It is structured into three parts. The first one is dealing with basic ideas of particle detectors, followed by applications of these devices in high energy physics and other fields. In the last part the large field of medical imaging using similar detection techniques is described. The different chapters of the book are written by world experts in their field. Clear instructions on the detection techniques and principles in terms of relevant operation parameters for scientists and graduate students are given.Detailed tables and diagrams will make this a very useful handbook for the application of these techniques in many different fields like physics, medicine, biology and other areas of natural science.
