Book Description
INTRODUCTION--(1831.) From what is said in the Introduction to the Monastery, it must necessarily be inferred, that the Author considered that romance as something very like a failure. It is true, the booksellers did not complain of the sale, because, unless on very felicitous occasions, or on those which are equally the reverse, literary popularity is not gained or lost by a single publication. Leisure must be allowed for the tide both to flow and ebb. But I was conscious that, in my situation, not to advance was in some Degree to recede, and being naturally unwilling to think that the principle of decay lay in myself, I was at least desirous to know of a certainty, whether the degree of discountenance which I had incurred, was now owing to an ill-managed story, or an ill-chosen subject. I was never, I confess, one of those who are willing to suppose the brains of an author to be a kind of milk, which will not stand above a single creaming, and who are eternally harping to young authors to husband their efforts, and to be chary of their reputation, lest it grow hackneyed in the eyes of men. Perhaps I was, and have always been, the more indifferent to the degree of estimation in which I might be held as an author, because I did not put so high a value as many others upon what is termed literary reputation in the abstract, or at least upon the species of popularity which had fallen to my share; for though it were worse than affectation to deny that my vanity was satisfied at my success in the department in which chance had in some measure enlisted me, I was, nevertheless, far from thinking that the novelist or romance-writer stands high in the ranks of literature. But I spare the reader farther egotism on this subject, as I have expressed my opinion very fully in the Introductory Epistle to the Fortunes of Nigel, first edition; and, although it be composed in an imaginary character, it is as sincere and candid as if it had been written "without my gown and band."

Book Description
Mirabeau, Texas, is a dynamite little town -- especially when toolsheds, doghouses, and mailboxes mysteriously begin to explode. So far, the sole victim is local librarian Jordan Poteet, struck by a chunk of his girlfriend's mailbox. Yet Jordy gets an even bigger jolt when his ex-girlfriend, Lorna, arrives from Boston. She's come to scoop up everybody's riverfront property -- and, if possible, Jordy as well. With pro-development folk and die-hard environmentalists all foaming at the mouth, tempers become downright murderous. And the unfortunate victim is Lorna's handsome colleague, garroted with a piece of barbed wire at the Mirabeau B&B. Dynamite, lust, murder...what next? Mirabeau braces for the worst and gets it -- while Jordy, his true love Candace, and Police Chief Junebug Moncrief light out after a killer... Agatha Award-winning author of Do Unto Others.

Book Description
The time which passes over our heads so imperceptibly, makes the same gradual change in habits, manners, and character, as in personal appearance. At the revolution of every five years we findourselves another, and yet the same-there is a change of views, and no less of the light in which weregard them; a change of motives as well as of actions. Nearly twice that space had glided away overthe head of Halbert Glendinning and his lady, betwixt the period of our former narrative, in whichthey played a distinguished part, and the date at which our present tale commences. Two circumstances only had imbittered their union, which was otherwise as happy as mutualaffection could render it. The first of these was indeed the common calamity of Scotland, being thedistracted state of that unhappy country, where every man's sword was directed against hisneighbour's bosom. Glendinning had proved what Murray expected of him, a steady friend, strongin battle, and wise in counsel, adhering to him, from motives of gratitude, in situations where by hisown unbiassed will he would either have stood neuter, or have joined the opposite party. Hence, when danger was near-and it was seldom far distant-Sir Halbert Glendinning, for he now borethe rank of knighthood, was perpetually summoned to attend his patron on distant expeditions, oron perilous enterprises, or to assist him with his counsel in the doubtful intrigues of a half-barbarouscourt. He was thus frequently, and for a long space, absent from his castle and from his lady; and tothis ground of regret we must add, that their union had not been blessed with children, to occupythe attention of the Lady of Avenel, while she was thus deprived of her husband's domestic society. On such occasions she lived almost entirely secluded from the world, within the walls of herpaternal mansion. Visiting amongst neighbors was a matter entirely out of the question, unless onoccasions of solemn festival, and then it was chiefly confined to near kindred. Of these the Lady ofAvenel had none who survived, and the dames of the neighbouring barons affected to regard herless as the heiress of the house of Avenel than as the wife of a peasant, the son of a church-vassal, raised up to mushroom eminence by the capricious favour of Murr

This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
