Sino-U.S. Energy Triangles

Sino-U.S. Energy Triangles PDF Author: David Zweig
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317677870
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 308

Book Description
The remarkable performance of the Chinese economy in the last three decades has placed China at the centre of the world stage. In 1993, China became a net importer of energy, although it was not until the early 2000s that the world began to pay more attention to China’s energy needs and its potential impact on the world. With China’s energy search occurring within a hegemonic global structure dominated by the United States, the US watches with interest as China enhances its ties with energy-rich states. The book examines this triangular relationship and questions whether the US and China are in competition regarding access to the energy of a third state, within the context of a potential power transition. It includes case studies on China's energy relationship with countries such as Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Iran, Sudan and Venezuela and aims to understand the way a rising power interacts with the existing leading power and the possible outcome of this competition. The analytical framework employed helps the reader to understand not only the nature and pattern of triangles among US, China and the Resource Rich States under ‘resource diplomacy’, but also the salient features of US-China competition around the world. Making an impressive contribution to the literature in fields such as US-China relations, international relations, Chinese foreign policy and global energy geopolitics, this book will appeal to students and scholars of these subjects.

Triangles, Symbols, and Constraints

Triangles, Symbols, and Constraints PDF Author: Charles Dobbs
Publisher: University Press of America
ISBN: 0761850007
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 330

Book Description
In his five-plus years as president of the United States, Lyndon Johnson witnessed dramatic power struggles within and between the Soviet Union, the People's Republic of China, and the United States of America. New Soviet leaders were determined to build Soviet power and extend Soviet influence. Mao's revolutionary ideology so dominated China that there were few levers to move Sino-American relations ahead. Johnson wanted to ease Cold War tensions by reaching a range of agreements with the Soviet Union on nuclear weapons and establishing relations with the People's Republic of China in order to end its isolation in the world community. However, multiple events frustrated Johnson's good intentions. The Soviet leadership that overthrew Nikita Khrushchev was committed to expanding its military might before negotiating with Washington; it also began focusing more and more on the worsening Sino-Soviet split. Mao Zedong entered into the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, and China seemed to devour itself. Meanwhile, the Vietnam War made negotiations among all three great powers more difficult, limiting room to maneuver. But Johnson persevered, and by 1968 the apparent American retreat symbolized by the North Korean seizure of the USS Pueblo and the Communist Tet Offensive in Vietnam, along with the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, seemed to change the construct between the great powers. Beijing, emerging from the worst of the Cultural Revolution, increasingly feared Soviet intentions, and Moscow wanted to prevent a Sino-American rapprochement. Although Johnson did not achieve his lofty goals, he created the pre-conditions that Richard Nixon later harvested for the dZtente with Moscow and rapprochement with Beijing. Johnson's best intentions fell prey to triangles, symbols, and constraints.

US-Chinese Strategic Triangles

US-Chinese Strategic Triangles PDF Author: S. Mahmud Ali
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319577476
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 278

Book Description
This book reveals the nature of Sino-US strategic competition by examining the influence exerted by major secondary stakeholders, e.g. Japan, Russia, India, the Koreas, and ASEAN, on the two powers, USA and its rival China, who consider each other as a source of greatest challenges to their respective interests. By adopting “strategic triangles” as the analytical framework and assessing triangular relational dynamics, such as US-China-Japan or US-China-Russia, the author illustrates how secondary stakeholders advance their own interests by exploiting their respective linkages to the two rivals, thereby, shaping Sino-US completive dynamics. This work adds a regional and multivariable perspective to the understanding of the Indo-Pacific’s insecurity challenges.
