Preparing Texas' Freight Transportation System for 2055
Author: Jolanda Prozzi

Pages : 146
Book Description
Efficient, reliable, and safe freight transportation is critical to the economic prosperity of any region. An efficient multimodal and intermodal transportation system reduces transportation and supply chain transaction costs and increases connectivity, mobility, reliability, and accessibility to local and global markets. An efficient freight transportation system, therefore, supports economic development, expansion of international trade, increased employment, growth in personal income, and growth of the gross domestic product of a region—ultimately improving the quality of life of its citizens. This research documents major trends (i.e., global trade, sociodemographic, environmental, and technology trends) that could impact the future business models of Texas’ companies; identifies and discuss factors that influence companies’ site selection decisions and explores how Texas ranks compared to other states; discusses changing business models and the associated impacts on and expectations for a future freight transportation system, and provides insight into the foreseen role for the Texas Department of Transportation in planning for an efficient, reliable, and safe freight transportation system in 2055 that supports the growth of industry and ultimately the Texas economy. This research document is a companion to Report 0-6809-2 that explores international rail traffic increases and their potential impacts on Texas rail planning needs.

Book Description
"What will an effective, efficient, and safe Texas freight transportation system look like four decades into the future? The Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) and the Center for Transportation Research at the University of Texas at Austin identified trends that could impact businesses' requirements for future freight transportation and conducted business interviews to gain an improved understanding of the envisioned future freight transportation system that will meet their business requirements. The study team also hosted a one day workshop to review the study findings and to discuss the role of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in conducting proactive freight planning that will support the future growth of industry and ultimately of the Texas economy"--Center for Transportation Research website.

Estimating Economic Impacts from Transportation Investments Using the Texas Statewide Analysis Model and TREDIS
Author: Samuel Felix Higgins
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 226
Book Description
Economic analyses of transportation investments are a common component of transportation planning. The profile of economic analyses has continued to rise due to increasing budget constraints and increasing emphasis on infrastructure's role in spurring economic development. One tool that has been developed specifically for transportation economic impact evaluation is the Transportation Economic Development Impact System (TREDIS). Common inputs for TREDIS are changes in travel characteristics caused by network improvements. Another commonly used planning tool is a travel demand model. Since 2003, the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) has worked on the development of the Statewide Analysis Model (SAM) which estimates travel characteristics for passenger and freight modes. Together, the models have the potential to improve project evaluation and to highlight the roles that certain projects have in creating economic development. The hypothesis explored for this study is that SAM and TREDIS can be feasibly used together to help TXDOT evaluate the economic impacts of investments in freight corridors and other transportation investments. This report begins with general discussions of transportation economic analyses and the two models used. Then, the current SAM is evaluated using TREDIS followed by a discussion of the results and ways that this type of integrated planning can be incorporated by agencies. Through this study, key results include: the process of incorporating results from the SAM for use in TREDIS is feasible, an overall benefit-cost ratio of 4 for the entire set of long range roadway projects included in the SAM and 8 for only the interstate projects included in the SAM, rail and other transportation analyses are feasible using SAM and TREDIS.
