Our American Cousin

Our American Cousin PDF Author: Tom Taylor
Publisher: BoD - Books on Demand
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 122

Book Description
Our American Cousin is a three-act play written by English playwright Tom Taylor. The play opened in London in 1858 but quickly made its way to the U.S. and premiered at Laura Keene’s Theatre in New York City later that year. It remained popular in the U.S. and England for the next several decades. Its most notable claim to fame, however, is that it was the play U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was watching on April 14, 1865 when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, who used his knowledge of the script to shoot Lincoln during a more raucous scene. The play is a classic Victorian farce with a whole range of stereotyped characters, business, and many entrances and exits. The plot features a boorish but honest American cousin who travels to the aristocratic English countryside to claim his inheritance, and then quickly becomes swept up in the family’s affairs. An inevitable rescue of the family’s fortunes and of the various damsels in distress ensues. Our American Cousin was originally written as a farce for an English audience, with the laughs coming mostly at the expense of the naive American character. But after it moved to the U.S. it was eventually recast as a comedy where English caricatures like the pompous Lord Dundreary soon became the primary source of hilarity. This early version, published in 1869, contains fewer of that character’s nonsensical adages, which soon came to be known as “Dundrearyisms,” and for which the play eventually gained much of its popular appeal.

Book Description
Now an Apple TV+ Series “A terrific narrative of the hunt for Lincoln’s killers that will mesmerize the reader from start to finish.”—Doris Kearns Goodwin The murder of Abraham Lincoln set off the greatest manhunt in American history--the pursuit and capture of John Wilkes Booth. From April 14 to April 26, 1865, the assassin led Union cavalry troops on a wild, 12-day chase from the streets of Washington, D.C., across the swamps of Maryland, and into the forests of Virginia, while the nation, still reeling from the just-ended Civil War, watched in horror and sadness. Based on rare archival materials, obscure trial transcripts, and Lincoln’s own blood relics Manhunt is a fully documented, fascinating tale of murder, intrigue, and betrayal. A gripping hour-by-hour account told through the eyes of the hunted and the hunters, it is history as it’s never been read before.

Category : True Crime
Languages : en
Pages : 226

Book Description
Christopher Wilder was about as bad as they get. A serial killer and predator, he first came to the attention of police in Sydney when as a teenager in 1963 he was charged with rape. As a young adult he relocated to Florida, USA. Wilder plied his vile and deadly trade on two continents and did so undetected for more than twenty years. He was a chameleon and a predator with a modus operandi refined over the decades, luring young teenage girls with the promise of a career as a photographic model. His final flourish was a six-week spree of abduction, sexual assault and murder crisscrossing the USA and earning him the top spot on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list. Wilder could have been stopped a few times in his evil career - but he wasn't. In addition to his many crimes in the US, he is now also a prime suspect for the infamous Wanda Beach murders - one of Australia's most notorious unsolved crimes. The Snapshot Killer explores how a monster was able to hide in plain sight and tells the tragic story of the many victims - at least twelve, but likely more - whose lives Wilder destroyed, with consequences that continue to resonate to this day.

The Suppressed Truth about the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln: The Religious Conspiracy Surrounding the President's Murder

The Suppressed Truth about the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln: The Religious Conspiracy Surrounding the President's Murder PDF Author: Burke McCarty
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 9780359046300
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 126

Book Description
Burke McCarty sets out a complex alternative theory regarding the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, namely the notion that the event was orchestrated by shadowy religious powers. McCarty gathers and presents correspondences and other documents; together these offer an alternate explanation for Lincoln's heinous murder. He alleges that a Treaty in Verona in 1822 was the start of a plot to kill an American President, a plot whose pieces would gradually fall into place in the four decades which followed. McCarty alleges involvement by the Pope and the Catholic church, plus other clandestine figures, pointing to what he considers coded references in letters. Modern historians and scholars consider alternative theories behind the death of President Lincoln as spurious conspiracy. The overwhelming evidence remains that John Wilkes Booth, a vain and agitated man with a craving for notoriety, acted alone in his scheme to murder Abraham Lincoln as the President watched a performance at Ford's Theater.

Book Description
EAVESDROPPING ON HISTORY. For lovers of history, there are many questions about the American War that have never been answered or that have been answered with obviously ridiculous lies. A perfect example is the lie about Fort Pillow. After Congress investigated the massacre it was found that eight of the men who testified as eyewitnesses before Congress were never there. But no one has ever asked who ordered those men to perjure themselves. Another example is the truth behind why Fort Sumter was shelled. The book is a page turner for those people who would love to eavesdrop on meetings where policy and crimes were fabricated. Listen in on a meeting Lincoln, Grant and Stanton are having on reneging on the Dix-Hill prisoner exchange program. Or listen in on a meeting Stanton is having with one of his employees John Wilkes Booth. Are you surprised? But most importantly it’s all about Lincoln. Keep an open mind about why he was so well preserved and why he behaved as he did. The book is a novel but most of the events are based on the evidence available as you shall see. That’s just a start of a book that took over 25 years of research to write!
