Off Beat

Off Beat PDF Author: Jan Hein Hoogstad
Publisher: Rodopi
ISBN: 9401208875
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 201

Book Description
Off Beat: Pluralizing Rhythm draws attention to rhythm as a tool for analyzing various cultural objects. In fields as diverse as music, culture, nature, and economy, rhythm can be seen as a phenomenon that both connects and divides. It suggests a certain measure with which people, practices, and cultures may comply. Yet, for this very reason rhythm can also function as a field of exclusion, contestation, and debate. In that respect, rhythm possesses an underestimated meaning-creating potential. Whereas its connecting force is often accentuated in the aesthetic, political, and commercial usage of the term, the divisive aspect of rhythm is at least as important. This volume wants to rid rhythm of its harmless, nearly esoteric, reputation as a cosmic unifier by understanding it in the light of the contemporary medial turn. In the present collection of essays, we have encouraged approaches that combine political, aesthetic, musical, and theoretical dimensions of rhythm. Jan Hein Hoogstad is Assistant Professor in Comparative Literature and Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Birgitte Stougaard Pedersen is Associate Professor in the Section for Aesthetics and Culture, Department of Aesthetics and Communication, Aarhus University, Denmark.

In so doing, it touches on a number of important issues, including whether there can be a universal 'gay identity' and whether or not strategies developed for increasing gay and lesbian visibility in western countries are appropriate to the social situation in Japan

Sexual Sites, Seminal Attitudes

Sexual Sites, Seminal Attitudes PDF Author: Sanjay Srivastava
Publisher: SAGE
ISBN: 9780761997771
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 416

Book Description
Discussions on sexuality in the South Asian context have tended to focus largely on men`s preoccupations through notions such as `semen-anxiety`. Another restrictive framework is the excessive importance ascribed to religion in everyday life. The result has been a rather narrow debate on sexuality. By providing accounts of a myriad sites and meanings of sexuality, this remarkable volume broadens the debate on sexuality in South Asia. It combines perspectives from history, anthropology, and cultural and literary studies to provide an interdisciplinary exploration of the cultures of, and the multiple meanings and contestations that gather around, masculinities and sexualities. The collection is unique in the breadth of its theoretical concerns; its focus on hitherto marginalized sexual identities; and its novel juxtapositions of analyses of colonial discourses with those of postcolonised modernity.

Sexuality Down Under

Sexuality Down Under PDF Author: Allison Kirkman
Publisher: Otago University Press
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
Sexuality permeates most aspects of everyday life. As it is both a hot topic and a taboo subject at the same time, its study is important and controversial. Essays in this book give many insights into issues surrounding sexuality in art, in advertising, in prostitution, in homosexual law reform and in relation to teenage motherhood, rape, medical practice, and male sexual 'disfunction'. As well, there are essays on how the West responded to indigenous Pacific peoples, and New Zealand's 'satanism scare' of the 1990s.
