A Conversation Analysis Approach to French L2 Learning

A Conversation Analysis Approach to French L2 Learning PDF Author: Clelia König
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429631804
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 146

Book Description
This book offers a critical examination of second language (L2) learning outside institutional contexts, with a focus on the way second language learners introduce, close, and manage conversational topics in everyday settings. König adopts a Conversation Analysis for Second Language Acquisition (CA-SLA) approach in analyzing oral data from a longitudinal study of L2 learners of French, au pairs in Swiss families, over several years. With this approach the author presents insights into the ways in which L2 learners introduce and close conversational topics in ongoing conversations and how these strategies evolve over time, setting the stage for future research on this little documented process in second language acquisition. This volume contributes toward a greater understanding of L2 learning “in the wild,” making this key reading for students and researchers in second language acquisition, applied linguistics, and French language learning and teaching.

Text Analysis in Translation

Text Analysis in Translation PDF Author: Christiane Nord
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 900450091X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 284

Book Description
Text Analysis in Translation has become a classic in Translation Studies. Based on a functional approach to translation and endebted to pragmatic text linguistics, it suggests a model for translation-oriented source-text analysis applicable to all text types and genres independent of the language and culture pairs involved. Part 1 of the study presents the theoretical framework on which the model is based, and surveys the various concepts of translation theory and text linguistics. Part 2 describes the role and scope of source-text analysis in the translation process and explains why the model is relevant to translation. Part 3 presents a detailed study of the extratextual and intratextual factors and their interaction in the text, using numerous examples from all areas of professional translation. Part 4 discusses the applications of the model to translator training, placing particular emphasis on the selection of material for translation classes, grading the difficulty of translation tasks, and translation quality assessment. The book concludes with the practical analysis of a number of texts and their translations, taking into account various text types and several languages (German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Dutch).

Literature Through Art

Literature Through Art PDF Author: Helmut Anthony Hatzfeld
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780484479752
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Excerpt from Literature Through Art: A New Approach to French Literature To the literary historian, a history of French literature in which art is used as the key to a better and deeper understanding of literature will be of primary concern. The art historian, on the other hand, will take the 0p posite view wishing to see art elucidated by other forms of expression. To us the paramount problem is the comparative analysis and appreciation of texts and pictures in their details. For this purpose the historian must also be a philologist and a critic, i.e. One who can analyze both texts and pictures with correctness and taste. Therefore philologist and critic must be under stood here in a double sense; first, factually, in regard to interpretation and iconography and second, formally, in regard to stylistics and formal de scription. From a methodological point of view, philology is involved in yet an other sense. It is gratifying to see that the text-bound analytical, and stylistic method in literary history as used here, and as Opposed to the traditionally vague, synthetic, and persuasive method, finds even on the non-compara tive level enthusiastic support from the analysts of literary style. It is they who have called for a change in the way of literary history. The method of explication de textes has been used for some years for historical purposes in the sense that the new literary history in the making is considered to be composed of single layers of interpreted texts as encountered in successive epochs. It is this method that is used here on a comparative basis, the ex plications de textes having been supplemented by the explications de tableaux. Ecocritical Approaches to Literature in French

Ecocritical Approaches to Literature in French PDF Author: Douglas L. Boudreau
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 1498517323
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
Ecocriticism is a critical approach that focuses on the representation in literature of the non-human elements of the natural world, a method of inquiry that has been largely limited to literature written in English. The aim of Ecocritical Approaches to Literature in French is twofold: to introduce ecocriticism to scholars of French-language literature, and to open ecocriticism to the vision and voices of French literature. The chapters look at work not only from France, but also from North America, the Caribbean, and Africa. The discussions include fiction, poetry, film and pedagogy. The goal of the collection is to demonstrate not only the applicability of ecocritical inquiry to literature in French, but to demonstrate the possibilities of ecocritical theory on the study of French literature, and also for ecocriticism itself. This collection will be a useful resource both for scholars of French-language literature and also for ecocritics who may have had only limited contact with literatures in languages other than English.

Analysing Practical and Professional Texts

Analysing Practical and Professional Texts PDF Author: Rod Watson
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317181573
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 153

Book Description
Analysing Practical and Professional Texts focuses on texts as constituents of human usage, showing how written documents and other 'texts' are integral to social organization. It reveals social organization itself to be not only textually-mediated in nature, but also textually-constituted, showing how texts - professional, technical or otherwise - as well as various social-scientific methodologies employ the resources of ordinary language. Theoretically sophisticated and illustrated with empirical examples, this book will be of interest not only to those with interests in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, but also to social scientists and anthropologists concerned with text analysis, textual sense and the 'linguistic turn' in the methods of their own disciplines.
