Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book of Logic It seems, therefore, that for some time to come logic will continue, in the main, to be traditional, and that books of logic will have to conform to the requirements that are determined by that fact. But there are all sorts and degrees of conformity, and I confess to a liking for that kind and degree which is not inconsistent with the exercise of the largest liberty of one's academic conscience. It would not be surprising, consequently, if it were discovered that I had allowed the present situation in: logic to sit lightly upon me, and that, where it seemed desirable, I had departed in method and doc trine from traditional views. It is I believe in some such way as this, rather than in assuming a critical, not to say captious, attitude toward the whole of traditional logic that the best interests both of the subject and of those who study it can be advanced. Aristotle's Material Logic

Aristotle's Material Logic PDF Author: Martin Cothran

ISBN: 9781930953574
Category : Logic

Book Description
What are the ten ways in which something can be said to exist? What are the five ways in which something can be said of something else? What are the four questions you must answer in order to really know something? In ancient and medieval times, the answers to these questions were common currency among thinking people. When most people think of logic, they think of formal logic the study of the structure or form of reasoning. But what most educators don t realize is that formal logic is only one part of a complete logic program. The other branch of logic study was called material logic, and focused, not on the form of reasoning, but on its content. In short, while formal logic studied the how of reasoning, material logic studied the what. There is a huge gap between formal logic courses and so-called thinking skills courses. Formal logic focuses exclusively on the systematic study of the structure of reasoning. That is important, but it hardly covers all you need to know to reason effectively. Thinking skills courses, on the other hand, tend to suffer from a highly nonsystematic topic-hopping approach, where the student is unable to see how one principle connects with another. With the publication of Material Logic: A Traditional Approach to Thinking Skills, these ancient techniques are a lost art no more. Whether you want a follow-on course to Memoria Press s popular Traditional Logic program, or simply an introductory thinking skills course for high school grades, this new addition to Memoria Press s widely acclaimed Classical Trivium Core Series is a valuable tool in teaching your student to think. Material Logic is designed to ease the job of the teacher or parent with straightforward explanations, an easy to read text layout, and digestible daily exercise sets. It can be used as either a one-semester or one-year course. Consumable. Grades 9-12."

Book Description
Excerpt from An Introductory Text-Book of Logic In the present volume the author's aim has been to provide a text-book at once elementary and philosophical. More specifically, he has endeavoured, in the first place, to give an accurate exposition of the essentials of "the Traditional Logic"; in the second place, to connect the traditional doctrine with its Aristotelian fountainhead, - not only because of the value and clearness of Aristotle's own treatment (as compared with later accretions), but in order to make various doctrines and phrases intelligible, which in the ordinary text-book are simply "shot from a pistol" as it were; in the third place, to show the open door leading from the traditional doctrine into the more modern and more strictly philosophical treatment of the subject. The book is intended to stop short of giving what is supplied in Mr Bosanquet's Essentials of Logic (not to mention larger works), but to lead on naturally to that and to a serious study of "Modern Logic." Book Description
Excerpt from A Text-Book of Logic The time has not arrived when it is possible or desirable to write a text-book of logic for elementary students which departs very considerably from the course that has been defined by university requirements in various parts of the world. Both in Europe and in America instruction in this subject has to a large extent been controlled by what may be called the classical tradition of which Aristotle and Mill are the two fountain heads. In some quarters this fact has operated as a hardship, and has led to open, if rather one-sided, criticism of the subject's educational usefulness, on the one hand, and has directed attention to and aroused interest in the real and supposed defects of the traditional logical doctrine, on the other. The position both of those who maintain the conservative attitude, and of those who would substitute for the old some new kind of logic, is capable of defence up to a certain point, and there is no doubt that the stirring of the academic waters on this subject will result at some time in a larger freedom in the choice of the material and methods of logical instruction, and to that extent will reduce the possibility of attributing to the subject the imperfections of temper and understanding of those who teach it.
