De Profundis

De Profundis PDF Author: Maria Magdalena Biela

Book Description
To the readers Romanian literature represents to Europe and the whole humanity a still unexplored writing, a historical document undiscovered yet by linguistic research, translators, readers, historians of the whole world. There are, in that space between the Carpathians, the Danube and the Black Sea, thoughts and testimonies of humanity in mint condition, thus preserved from their very creation. It seems to me a defeat of the universal culture, a lack, an amputation. I don't know how many people are familiar with the names of artists such as: Dosoftei, Vasile Alecsandri, Mihai Eminescu, Tudor Arghezi, Nicolae Labis, George Bacovia, Ion Minulescu, Lucian Blaga, Nichita Stanescu, Ion Barbu, Marin Sorescu (and here I have named only a few creators of an extraordinary poetry with a purely Romanian specificity). There are no translations because there is no interest in knowing the Romanian language. There are only prejudices. To label the culture of a nation only by judging its contemporaries is a historical injustice. Poetry, like music and mathematics, is the identity of a nation: it crosses any border, it speaks to any man, regardless of the country in which he was born, regardless of the historical vicissitudes. Poetry speaks to the soul: whoever wants to listen to the poetic voice, does not listen to the politicians first. Romanian poets had the misfortune of being born under the sign of historical anonymity. This does not mean that the value of their poetic creation cannot support the comparison with the classics of the world. Yes, there are Mircea Eliade, Emil Cioran, Tristan Tzara, the Romanians who wrote, thought, lived outside Romania's borders. Doesn't their name present a guarantee of the value of those left at home, in the Romanian village or city, to suffer, to write, to think, more or less free? With fear and clumsiness, I offer you a crumb from a copious spiritual feast, a piece of a historical puzzle, a wee bit of an unadulterated, undefiled, almost holy Romanian soul. Romanian language, this wonderful amalgam of linguistic influences, gave humanity a poetry like a water lily flower: "Don't you know that water lilies grow from lakes with muddy bottoms?" (Lucian Blaga) I come to your windows whispering in my beautiful native language poems of Life: welcome me with an open heart, a glass of water and a slice of bread. Smile to me, recognize me, be kind and in return I will guide you to a mystic fascinating land: Romanian heart of words. Blessed be, Maria Magdalena Biela

The Mountains of Romania

The Mountains of Romania PDF Author: Janneke Klop
Publisher: Cicerone Press
ISBN: 1783628170
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 417

Book Description
This guide describes 27 short treks of 2-6 days and 10 day walks in the mountains of Romania. Although there is a slight focus on Transylvania, most of the main massifs are included, with chapters covering the Mountains of Maramures, the Eastern Carpathians, the mountains around Brasov, the Fagara?, the region between the Olt and the Jiu, the Retezat, the mountains of Banat and the Apuseni. Also included is an ascent of Moldoveanu, Romania's highest peak at 2544m. There is a wealth of advice to help you plan your trip and organise the logistics of your walk or trek. Some routes avail of the network of mountain huts; others offer opportunities to camp in attractive wild locations. Overviews and a route summary table make it easy to choose an appropriate excursion. Each route includes clear description and mapping, as well as notes on accommodation and access (some can be accessed by public transport, although others require either pre-arranged pick-up or hitchhiking). There are fascinating insights into Romania's colourful culture and history and appendices containing hut listings, useful contacts and a helpful glossary. The graded routes are as varied as Romania's diverse landscapes. They take in rolling hills, craggy karst peaks, glacial lakes and Europe's last virgin forests, with other highlights including Transylvanian castles, wooden churches, the Piatra Craiului ridge and the spectacular Sapte Scari (Seven Ladders) and Turda Gorges. Historic towns such as the medieval towns of Brasov and Sibiu and the spa resort of Vatra Dornei offer easy access to the mountains; other routes visit remote villages that have changed little over the centuries, where self-sufficiency is still very much the way of life. All in all, the guide is a perfect companion to discovering the unspoilt beauty of Romania's enchanting mountain regions.
