Esta é a segunda coletânea do Grupo Procad dos Institutos de Economia da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia e da Universidade Estadual de Campinas, e recolhe os últimos resultados de pesquisas de seus membros. Na primeira parte, os capítulos que abordam a questão do desenvolvimento territorial numa perspectiva teórica, passando pelo questionamento sobre a existência de uma nova economia do desenvolvimento e pela conclusão de que a agenda do desenvolvimento nacional requer o enfren-tamento de questões como a interurbanidade, a intersetorialidade produtiva, a ruralidade e a inter-regionalidade territorial, e requer ter presente a necessidade de ações nos meios rural e urbano, não apenas como contexto, mas como espaços de inter-relações construídas conflituosamente. A segunda parte reúne estudos de caso com enfoque territorial, como é o estudo do Pólo de Irrigação do Submédio do Vale do São Francisco e o debate acerca da concentração regional das atividades produtivas no Brasil, por meio do estudo de dois municípios pólos regionais, destacando elementos ligados aos fluxos e redes estabelecidas por empresas no âmbito de seu processo de produção, às relações de compra e venda no território, à origem territorial dos trabalhadores e à importância de fatores de localização para a atividade produtiva. Na terceira parte, o tema da agricultura familiar e suas relações com o desenvolvimento territorial são abordados sob duas perspectivas; a do crédito rural e a da pluriatividade. Na última parte, apresen-tamos três contribuições a respeito da temática da segurança alimentar, abordada sob a perspectiva de seu enfrentamento utilizando o enfoque territorial.

This book is about unequal development and labour in Brazil, with particular reference to the economic and social development of the Northeast region, which has suffered persistent disadvantage. It combines a historical approach, which shows how economic, social and political institutions have been restructured over time, with an analysis of changes in the pattern of production, employment, unemployment and inequality up to the present day. The Amazon region is the focus of intense conflict between conservationists concerned with deforestation and advocates of agro-industrial development. This book focuses on the contributions of environmental organizations to the preservation of Brazilian Amazonia. It reveals how environmental organizations such as Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, WWF and others have fought fiercely to stop deforestation in the region. It documents how the history of frontier expansion and environmental struggle in the region is linked to Brazil’s position in an evolving capitalist world-economy. It is shown how Brazil’s effort to become a developed country has led successive Brazilian governments to devise development projects for Amazonia. The author analyses how globalization has led to the expansion of international commodity chains in the region, particularly for mineral ores, soybeans and beef. He shows how environmental organizations have politicized these commodity chains as weapons of conservation, through boycotting certain products, while other pro-development groups within Brazil claim that such organizations threaten Brazil's sovereignty over its own resources.
