Book Description
Excerpt from Territorial Soldiering: In the North-East of Scotland During 1759-1814 My Lord Duke, If the Epistle Dedicatory has fallen into desuetude, the grim business of battle is so far front being in abeyance that we have been compelled to turn the p an of Peace with which the centenary of the Treaties of Paris and of Ghent was to have been celebrated into the pursuit of the greatest War the world has ever seen. And in the event, this book has been unconsciously transformed from a mere historical excursus into a practical demonstration of what our ancestors did to meet the national crisis of a hundred years and more ago. That crisis has found Your Grace in the active ranks of recruiters, precisely as the menaces of 1759-1814 found your forefathers. You have spent your energy in summoning the youth of your Northern home to the colours. You have sent all your three sons to the front, losing the youngest of them almost within hail of Quatre Bras, to the field of which Wellington and his officers hurried from your great-grandmother's famous ball in Brussels. The gallant Regiment of Highlanders which your great-great-grandfather, the 4th Duke of Gordon, with the help of his incomparable consort, raised, has fought and bled on the fields of France and Flanders, as its predecessor fought at Quatre Bras and Waterloo; and your domains are sending more men and still more to fill up the gaps in its decimated ranks. But Your Grace needed no such impetus as actual War to help you to carry on the traditions inherited from the Gay Gordons as well as from the line of Lennox. Book Description
I would encourage every patriotic Indian looking to contribute to the defence of our motherland to read this book to draw their respective course of actions. – Anil Sharma, Producer-Director of Bollywood movie Gadar In the present global environment, to protect their freedom and territorial integrity, countries need armed forces. To complement such forces, reserves are required. This can be met by the creation of a body of part-time soldiers in the form of a territorial army with short-training spells on weekends and holidays. This body, which is fondly known as the citizens’ army across the world, can be formed out of all able-bodied men and women who are willing to defend their motherland; and in the normal course are engaged in their respective civilian occupations. The officers of this type of army, including those in high staff and leadership positions from the corporate world or otherwise, would principally be citizen-soldiers supported by a limited number of professional soldiers from the regular army. These regular soldiers would comprise the staff and command appointments which require continuity and full-time commitments; and who would also perform permanent technical, administrative and training assignments. Nations which adopt this kind of a military system assume a large and ready defence force of immediate combat value, at a cost to the exchequer, far below that of the more familiar nature of military systems.

Territorial Ambitions and the Gardens of Versailles

Territorial Ambitions and the Gardens of Versailles PDF Author: Chandra Mukerji
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521599597
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 424

Book Description
In seventeenth-century France, land took on new importance for the practice of politics and rituals of court life. In her major new book, Chandra Mukerji highlights the connections between the two seemingly disparate activities of engineering and garden design. She shows how, at Versailles in particular, the royal park showcased French skills in using nature and art to design a distinctively French landscape and create a naturalized political territoriality. She challenges the association of state power with social and legal structures alone and demonstrates the importance for Louis XIV and his state of a controlled physical site, a demarcated French territory within the wider European geo-political continent.
