Caves and Karst of the Upper Midwest, USA
Author: Greg A. Brick
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030546330
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 320
Book Description
This book discusses the karst and pseudokarst of the Upper Midwest, USA, consisting of the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Illinois—the first regional synthesis in 40 years. Starting with an overview of the regional geology of what is largely glaciated fluviokarst and paleokarst developed on Paleozoic carbonates, but including other lithologies such as the St. Peter Sandstone and the Ft. Dodge Gypsum, the caves, springs, sinkholes, and karst hydrogeology of each state are described. Special attention is devoted to the region’s longest caves: Coldwater Cave, Mystery Cave, and the Minnesota Cave Preserve caves. Application of tools such as data loggers and LiDAR, with new conceptual models such as hypogenic speleogenesis, has been transformative here. Special topics include lead and zinc mining in the Driftless Area, vertebrate and invertebrate cave fauna near the Laurentide ice limit, the impact and policies of nutrient and herbicide intensive modern agriculture on karst, and paleoclimate studies. The discovery, exploration, institutional history of caving organizations, and show caves of the Upper Midwest, from the year 1700 onwards, are brought up to date. The top 10 historical paradigms of cave and karst science in the Midwest are reviewed. Perspectives on paleontology, archeology, and Native American rock art are included.

The Pleistocene Mammals of Iowa
Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene Small Mammals in South West Britain
Author: Catherine R. Price
Publisher: British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 126
Book Description
Price's thesis examines small mammal remains from twelve cave sites in south west England and Wales. This evidence is related to each cave's archaeological evidence in order to determine the impact of humans on depositional processes in caves as well as on the wider environment outside the cave. This is a specialist study with much of the data presented in diagrams, tables and distribution maps. The sites, located in south Devon, the Mendips, Wye Valley and south Wales, include Three Holes Cave, King Arthur's Cave, Merlin's Cave and Symond's Yat East Cave.

Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic Mammals of North America
Author: Michael O. Woodburne
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231503784
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 413
Book Description
This book places into modern context the information by which North American mammalian paleontologists recognize, divide, calibrate, and discuss intervals of mammalian evolution known as North American Land Mammal Ages. It incorporates new information on the systematic biology of the fossil record and utilizes the many recent advances in geochronologic methods and their results. The book describes the increasingly highly resolved stratigraphy into which all available temporally significant data and applications are integrated. Extensive temporal coverage includes the Lancian part of the Late Cretaceous, and geographical coverage includes information from Mexico, an integral part of the North American fauna, past and present.
