Las propuestas metodológicas dedicadas a la teoría del cuento - en especial las elaboradas por Genette, Greimas, Todorov y Bremond - se han convertido en un instrumentario cómodo al alcance de todos los estudiosos. Sin embargo, en los últimos tiempos la investigación parece haberse estancado. Ha faltado un esfuerzo por conciliar los diferentes enfoques: en particular siguen coexistiendo, sin acercarse entre sí, los modelos del análisis de la intriga y, por otro lado, los estudios centrados en la narración o en el plano del discurso. La situación actual invita a reflexionar sobre la disparidad de los modelos y la posibilidad de elaborar nuevas pautas metodológicas. Los trabajos reunidos en este volumen abordan precisamente estos problemas metodológicos, ya desde el punto de vista de la teoría de los géneros narrativos, ya a través de análisis particulares referidos a narraciones hispanas, desde Cervantes a García Márquez.
