We investigate the equilibrium and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability of tokamaks with tensor pressure and examine, in particular, the effects of anisotropies induced by neutral beam injection. Perpendicular and parallel beam pressure components are evaluated by taking moments of a distribution function obtained from the solution of a Fokker-Planck equation that models the injection of high-energy neutral beams into a tokamak. We numerically generate D-shaped beam-induced tensor pressure equilibria. A double adiabatic energy principle is derived from a modified version of the guiding center plasma energy principle. Finally, we apply the tensor pressure ballooning mode equation to computed equilibria that model experimentally determined ISX-B discharge profiles with high-power neutral beam injection. We predict that the plasma is unstable to flutelike modes in the central core of the discharge as a result of the pressure profile peakedness induced by the beams.

A force balance relation, a representation for the poloidal beta (.beta./sub p/), and expressions for the current densities are derived from the MHD equilibrium relations for an axisymmetric tensor pressure tokamak. Perpendicular and parallel beam pressure components are evaluated from a distribution function that models high energy neutral particle injection. A double adiabatic energy principle is derived from that of Kruskal and Oberman, with correction terms added. The energy principle is then applied to an arbitrary cross-section axisymmetric tokamak to examine ballooning instabilities of large toroidal mode number. The resulting Euler equation is remarkably similar to that of ideal MHD. Although the field-bending term is virtually unaltered, the driving term is modified because the pressures are no longer constant on a flux surface. Either a necessary or a sufficient marginal stability criterion for a guiding center plasma can be derived from this equation whenever an additional stabilizing element unique to the double adiabatic theory is either kept or neglected, respectively.

This book bridges the gap between general plasma physics lectures and the real world problems in MHD stability. In order to support the understanding of concepts and their implication, it refers to real world problems such as toroidal mode coupling or nonlinear evolution in a conceptual and phenomenological approach. Detailed mathematical treatment will involve classical linear stability analysis and an outline of more recent concepts such as the ballooning formalism. The book is based on lectures that the author has given to Master and PhD students in Fusion Plasma Physics. Due its strong link to experimental results in MHD instabilities, the book is also of use to senior researchers in the field, i.e. experimental physicists and engineers in fusion reactor science. The volume is organized in three parts. It starts with an introduction to the MHD equations, a section on toroidal equilibrium (tokamak and stellarator), and on linear stability analysis. Starting from there, the ideal MHD stability of the tokamak configuration will be treated in the second part which is subdivided into current driven and pressure driven MHD. This includes many examples with reference to experimental results for important MHD instabilities such as kinks and their transformation to RWMs, infernal modes, peeling modes, ballooning modes and their relation to ELMs. Finally the coverage is completed by a chapter on resistive stability explaining reconnection and island formation.
